Job Description:

DIVISION: Academic

DEPARTMENT: Charles F. Dolan School of Business

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Assistant Dean/Director of Undergraduate Programs & Director of Career Development Center, the Student Experience Counselor supports the day- to-day operations of the Dolan School of Business Undergraduate Program & Dolan Career Development Center, including administrative and student-centered work. Working within the parameters of a faculty advising model, the Student Experience Counselor provides support to faculty advisors and undergraduate students throughout all aspects of the academic planning process including curricular and co-curricular opportunities, with a primary focus on the academic and professional development experience of the first year students. With the retention rate from first-year to sophomore as an important performance benchmark, the Counselor supports integrated retention efforts, including the monitoring, counseling, and academic coaching of Dolan School of Business students identified as academically ‘at risk’ and works collaboratively with faculty and university personnel to provide comprehensive support services. Supports the student experience by providing career coaching to Dolan students. Represents the Dolan School of Business at university functions and on university committees; supports the promotion of various Dolan School of Business recruitment, communication, and marketing initiatives.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: Some evenings and weekend hours required; vacation time limited during peak times including the first month of each semester and during summer orientation.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED:
• Works well independently as well as in a team environment.
• Demonstrated skill in and passion for working with undergraduate students.
• Demonstrated interpersonal relationship-building skills and experience working with a wide range of constituents, including employers, faculty, students, and alumni
• Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
• Effective communication with strong written, interpersonal and presentations skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Demonstrated planning and implementation experience and skills

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree required.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 1 year of experience in higher education, preferably in academic advising, career counseling, or a closely related field. Demonstrated
effective interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills. Proficiency in various computer software programs; knowledge of Banner preferred.
Demonstrated experience in new program planning, implementation, and follow through. Knowledge and skills in career development theory, and career coaching (preferred).
Knowledge and skills in student development theory and/or counseling (preferred).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Supports the Assistant Dean & Director of Career Development with the day-to-day operations of the Dolan School of Business.
2. Advise, support, and coach students individually and in group settings as they explore academic, professional, and personal development.
- advise First Year students regarding university policies and procedures, academic programs, and graduation requirements
- advise students during peak times including course registration, add/drop period, and prior to the course withdrawal deadline
- advise students on selection of a major, complementary programs, and career opportunities
- support the overall academic planning experience including curricular and co-
curricular opportunities
- Ensure student’s participation in the Dolan School of Business Professional Development Series, internships, university involvement, etc.
3. Supports retention efforts including the monitoring, counseling, and academic coaching of Dolan School of Business students identified as academically ‘at risk’ and works collaboratively with campus partners to provide comprehensive support services. This includes:
- students formally placed on Academic Probation or identified as at risk of probation/dismissal
- students referred by the Case Management Committee and/or faculty inquiries identifying students of concern
- Monitor Academic Alerts & Midterm Estimates and provide student outreach
- Respond to parent phone calls, with the guidance of Assistant Dean, while maintaining FERPA regulations
4. Lead presentations and information sessions for academic classes, professional development sessions, and current students.
--Lead career presentations about the Professional Development Series
--Lead academic presentations about the Dolan Curriculum
5. Implement marketing efforts to ensure students are aware of and utilizing career services.
6. Represents the Dolan School of Business at university functions, Dolan School of Business sponsored programs/events, and on university committees when appropriate.
--Participate in first year orientation
7. Assists in the development, implementation, and promotion of special projects within the Dolan School of Business as deemed necessary.
8. Participates in the growth and development of the department. This involves:
- attending Dolan School of Business staff meetings
- communicating effectively with Assistant Dean & Director of Career Development concerning pertinent department matters
- promoting an image of professionalism throughout the university community and consistent with the Dolan School of Business mission
- remaining current on recent developments in Academic Advising and Academic Support Services through attendance at professional development conferences/workshops/seminars
10. Promotes safe and secure working conditions. This involves:
-promoting the proper utilization of equipment and materials
-reporting immediately to supervisor any unsafe working conditions
11. Performs other related duties as requested.
