Bob Cole Conservatory of Music

The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music (BCCM) at California State University Long Beach seeks an innovative and versatile new colleague to offer courses in composition, music theory, and musicianship for our diverse population of music majors. The successful candidate will express vision for an updated undergraduate music theory sequence employing recent thinking in the discipline; will teach composition lessons to bachelor's and master's students; and design innovative new courses to expand our current offerings.

Required Qualifications:
  • D.M.A or Ph.D. degree in composition. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2022.
  • Demonstrated potential to successfully teach composition and theory
  • Demonstrated potential to amass a portfolio of compositions in a diverse array of genres and styles
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: commercial, film, game or popular musics; non-Western musics; multimedia or interactive media; sound art, sound design, or sound studies; improvisation or improvisation studies; music cognition; and ecocriticism or acoustic ecology
  • Demonstrated activity in visioning music theory curriculum that is in line with current trends in the discipline
  • Experience in experimental or electronic music who can guide our New Music and Laptop Ensembles
  • Entrepreneurial skills in the music industry including production, publishing, and promotion
  • Evidence of working either academically or professionally with other disciplines such as Art, Dance, Design, Film or Theatre
  • Demonstrated potential to recruit and retain a diverse group of students to our established composition program
  • Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body

Duties:
  • Teach courses in theory, analysis, and musicianship at both undergraduate and graduate levels; also teach applied lessons in composition at the undergraduate and graduate levels [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.]
  • Mentor graduate students
  • Lead the New Music or Laptop ensembles
  • Coordinate course offerings and staffing in the composition and theory area
  • Assist in recruiting, reviewing, and supervising part-time faculty, technical staff and student assistants
  • Develop and maintain ongoing research, scholarly and creative activities leading to performances, recordings, and publications
  • Act as program liaison with professionals in the field
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, community, and professional field

Housed within the College of the Arts(COTA), the BCCM serves 450-520 students per year and offers undergraduate and graduate degree in performance (classical and jazz),music education, and composition. BCCM ensembles have performed worldwide and won prizes at prestigious festivals and competitions; music education alumni are teaching in P-12 and higher education settings across the country; and faculty and student composers have had their music performed around the world. The composition area is home to the Gerald Strang Electronic Music Studio and the Film Scoring Studio. Our community of faculty and student composers meets regularly to host guests and share new works through the Composers' Colloquium and the Composers' Guild. We at the BCCM believe that all forms of musical expression are worthy of practice and study.
