Job Description: 

Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Director of Residential and Commuter Life in Student Affairs (GA309). The Director of Residential and Commuter Life provides oversight for all aspects of residential and commuter life at Longwood. The Director supervises fulltime Master's level professional staff and graduate students who supervise student staff and is an integral part of the RCL team that participates in departmental planning and review. This position also serves in the Administrator-on-Call rotation to serve as the emergency response when individual and campus emergencies arise. 

  • Oversee the daily operation and behavioral response in main campus residence halls and Longwood managed properties.
  • Directly supervise Master's level staff and/or graduate students and indirectly approximately 125 undergraduate staff. 
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and recognition of all professional staff and student staff.
  • Oversee RCL departmental planning, strategic initiatives, assessment, policy review and development.
  • Serve as Administrator on Call by providing back-up to the REC on Call, coordinating response during serious emergency issues, and contacting parents/guardians as appropriate. 

  

Requirements: 

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education or related comparable field.
  • Seven or more years of progressive residential life experience in a higher education environment.
  • Four or more years working in crisis management and serving as an on-call administrator with preferred experience as a supervisor of professionals in an on-call role.
  • Experience overseeing residence hall programming.
  • Experience overseeing student staff selection and student staff training.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (students, staff, faculty, parents/guardians, and administrators) with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to act independently, take initiative and exercise sound judgment.
  • Some weekend and evening work is required.
