Job Description

Description:

Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure and Research Computing, the IT Systems Administration manager, this position oversees the university server infrastructure environment. The position provides oversight and supervision of the System Administration team on the design, implementation, and day to day operations of physical and virtual servers, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, VMware, storage, and related equipment.

Responsibilities:

Campus Server Infrastructure Management: 25%
  • Responsible for the Division of Information Technology campus server infrastructure including virtualization, storage, and cloud environments.
  • Implement systems required to provide services to Islander students, faculty, staff, and researchers.
  • Assists in the designs, controls, and processes for supporting the delivery of large-scale information technology services. Monitors and analyzes operational metrics and implements continuous improvement methodologies to include corrective actions.
  • Performs limited advanced technical duties in support of large projects and operations. Serves as a technical resource for other staff members.
  • Maintains, establishes, and develops new collaborative working relationships with stakeholders, customers, and vendors.


People and Resource Management: 20%
  • Provides overall leadership and mentoring for assigned staff.
  • Manages the administrative processes for human resource actions (hiring, professional development, promotions, terminations, disciplinary procedures, and salary adjustments) to maintain a skilled technical and customer service-oriented staff.
  • Provides appropriate and timely communications to the department, management, IT division, and other University departments.
  • Responsible for budgeting and resource planning to meet departmental goals.
  • Develop departmental standard operating procedures. ​
  • Establishes team goals, objectives, and expectations; develops and approves schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals; provide ongoing performance feedback and staff development plans; delegate responsibilities.
  • Leads, motivates, develops, and coaches multi-disciplined technical staff. Models ethical, regulatory, and performance standards. Champions workplace diversity and inclusiveness. Models and promotes the open sharing of information, dedication to the team's mission, customer commitment, collaboration, and cooperation.
  • Uses established project management protocols to lead the planning, budgeting, execution, and successful completion of departmental projects. Facilitates the analysis of project needs, risks, and recommends solutions. Assists project or area budgets.
  • Participates in training and professional development with a special emphasis on leadership development, management, industry related acumen, and project and operations management.


Strategic Planning: 15%
  • Stays abreast of system architectures including security and next generation technologies.
  • Represent the department and university on committees and working groups.
  • Confers with Director of Infrastructure and Research Computing to implement strategic plans and long and short-term goals.
  • Assist the Director and CIO by managing and executing projects that support the University's strategic plan.
  • Conducts, and/or directs capacity planning exercises regarding server and storage utilization, makes improvement recommendations and determines systems requirements.
  • Reviews system upgrades and designs documentation for completeness and accuracy; keeps current on new hardware/software technologies and trends; plans and schedules system upgrades and
    implementations.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: 10%
  • Develop, implement, and maintain disaster recover and/or business continuity plans.
  • Periodically assess effectiveness of the plans and report to supervisor.
  • Remain abreast of IT security and disaster recovery / business continuity best practices.
  • Participate in university and higher education working groups and committees as needed.


Research Support: 10%
  • Assist the university research community in accelerating their research efforts through consultation in design and implementation of cloud and on-premises cyber-infrastructure resources.
  • Serve as a communication conduit connecting and coordinating interactions between researchers and technology providers translating complex technical information.
  • Assists the research community with computing and storage infrastructure components of funded research proposals.
  • Assists the research community with Infrastructure security, patch management, and business continuity.
  • Assist the Director of Infrastructure and Research Computing with identifying and developing the cyberinfrastructure research community and broadening engagement across the university.


Other: 5%
  • May require availability to work some nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Level II:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Network Administration, Cyber Security, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of directly related IT management experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as a substitution:
    • High School Diploma and 9 years of experience.
    • Master's and3 years of experience.


Level III:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Network Administration, Cyber Security, or related field.
  • Seven (7) years of directly related IT management experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as a substitution:
    • High School Diploma and 11 years of experience.
    • Master's and 5 years of experience.

Other
  • Experience with servers, storage, load balancers, VMware, M365, cloud environments,
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and other applications used to create system diagrams.
  • Due to federal law on deemed export controls, it is not possible to petition for an H1B work authorization. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, and ITAR compliant.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Industry recognized professional level certifications in related technologies, project management, and management.
  • Knowledge of team leadership skills including motivating team and group processes, team collaboration, empowering, coaching, mentoring, training, ethical integrity, championing diversity and inclusiveness, and supervising staff.
  • Knowledge of strategic thinking and planning.
  • Knowledge of project and operations management.
  • Industry related skills to include knowledge of the IT industry and trends, knowledge of IT security regulations, and proficiency with the Information Technology Interface Library (ITIL).
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.


Salary:
  • Commensurate upon experience.
