Computer Technical Specialist



Job Summary:

The TCU library seeks a Computer Technical Specialist for a 10- month appointment to work late night (3rd shift 10pm – 7am) in the Information Commons computer lab. The lab includes 100 PC’s and 28 Mac work stations and 35 laptop computers, four high-capacity networked printers, MS Office and Adobe Creative cloud software, along with several specialized software packages.
Job duties include assisting students and faculty with software and specialized hardware such as scanners; maintaining lab printers; regularly cleaning and checking the status of equipment; providing first-line troubleshooting for hardware and software problems.
Two years of experience in supporting personal computers including software and hardware is required. The candidate should have customer service skills as well as technical skill. An ability to communicate both orally and in writing is also essential.

During the fall and spring semesters, the Information Commons computer lab is open 24 hours per day, five days a week – from 11am, Sunday – 5pm, Friday. The schedule for the position is 10pm – 7am, Sunday – Thursday (with either a 1 or ½ hour meal break). This position is a 10-month appointment running from August – end of May. This position reports to the Computer lab Supervisor, and shares duties with another Computer Technical Specialist working the same schedule.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:
  1. Diagnoses and resolves Macintosh and PC computer user concerns by consulting with users; evaluates issues; makes recommendations from multiple options.
  2. Prepares user to operate equipment by providing instructions; supports PC labs; contributes technical articles for the department newsletter.
  3. Supports PC operations by presenting information and responding to questions in new students’ and parents’ orientation; discusses email accounts; connects student computers to the TCU network; explains computing capabilities; resolves departmental computer issues.
  4. Identifies issues that impact TCU computing efforts by participating in special projects, researching and analyzing, and summarizing information for management review.
  5. Supports Library Information Commons by recording, prioritizing, and assigning issues from the open log; staffs the desk; facilitates requests for assistance; supports personal computers, scanners, and lab printers.
  6. Ensures departmental workflow by prioritizing daily assignments in the absence of the manager.
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience :
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • 2 years of experience in supporting personal computers, including software and hardware.
Preferred Education & Experience:
  • Experience with Apple Computers.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge to troubleshoot problems with personal computers.
  • Knowledge of hardware and software applications.
  • Knowledge to instruct end-users on system capabilities.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques.
Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.
Work Environment:
  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
