Position Details
The Construction Services team is responsible for the programming, planning, design, and bidding for the major maintenance, renovation and construction of buildings, grounds, utilities and infrastructure for approximately 300 Wesleyan University buildings including a central power plant that encompasses almost 3 million square feet.

Reporting to the Director of Utilities and Infrastructure, the Assistant Project Manager is responsible for assisting with the coordination of large projects and directly coordinating smaller projects involving renovations and alterations to almost 3 million square feet of academic, administrative, athletic and residential space in approximately 300 buildings across campus.

The Assistant Project Manager serves as liaison among physical plant shops, campus departments, and external contractors for coordinating and scheduling construction projects. The position is responsible for visiting work sites to determine necessary resources and inspect projects to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the management of pre-construction phase project management services including meeting with representatives of the University and the program(s) to: develop program requirements, project scope, project schedule, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Assisting in the facilitation, selection and hiring of the design and construction teams including but not limited to benchmarking, site visits, developing requests for proposals, preparing design contracts, soliciting bids for construction, preparing qualitative and quantitative summaries of bids.
  • Assisting with the management of the construction phase project management service including preparing and award the construction contract, scheduling the work with contractors and owners, conducting weekly construction meetings to address matters such as procedures, progress, problems and scheduling.
  • Monitoring assigned projects for compliance with budget, schedule, scope, and contract. Maintaining project documentation including submittals, schedules, requisitions, test reports, correspondence, and closeout materials
  • Assisting with quality control and quality assurance oversight of projects. Working with testing agencies to schedule testing on site. Performing field inspections to confirm drawing and specification compliance.
  • Attending project meetings as required by the team, preparing meeting documents and creating presentation materials and distributes meeting minutes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree in engineering, architecture or construction management or a related field and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in construction management, design or related work or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.

Experience with field construction oversight including meeting attendance and field quality control

General understanding of building systems including mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems

General understanding of building codes

Experience with project scheduling Desktop computer skills including the proficient use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, e-mail and maintenance management systems.

Effective communication skills including a collaborative working style

Excellent organizational skills; and the ability to excel in fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret specifications and drawings.

Ability to administer customer service and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.

Results-oriented, self-motivated individual

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, objectives, and deadlines
Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and work collegially with individuals of different backgrounds
Valid State of Connecticut driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.
Ability to meet the requirements of the position above with or without accommodation
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of all local, state and national building codes including fire codes.

5 years of experience in engineering or construction administration.

Proficiency in AutoCad, MS Project, Revu Bluebeam.
