Information Literacy Librarian

The University of Tennessee at Martin, Paul Meek Library, seeks applications for a tenure-track colleague in the role of Information Literacy Librarian. Reporting to the Dean of the Paul Meek Library, the position provides leadership to implement and manage library instruction at the University’s main campus in Martin, to its five regional centers across western Tennessee, and to the University’s expanding online programs. The Library serves a population of 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students. 

The University of Tennessee at Martin is a primary campus in the University of Tennessee System.  It is located in beautiful, rural Northwest Tennessee, approximately 120 miles north of Memphis and 150 miles west of Nashville.  The University’s emphasis is rooted in excellence of undergraduate instruction.  The faculty and staff provide a caring and nurturing campus environment for all students.  At UT Martin, students have opportunities to engage in over 125 campus leadership and service organizations.  The UT Martin campus is recognized as one of the safest in the nation.

The community of Martin and the surrounding area are both relaxed and friendly and boast a low cost of living.  There are multiple opportunities to participate in various local and national civic and volunteer organizations.  There are several local parks, as well as state and national recreation areas, including Reelfoot Lake and Land Between the Lakes, located within easy driving distance.  

Primary Assignment: Information Literacy

• Coordinate library instruction and provide leadership in expanding, enhancing, and assess the delivery of library instructions to students both on and off main campus.
• Coordinate the library’s Personal Librarian Program to match all first-year students with their own designated librarian.
• Take on the primary responsibility for teaching information literacy skills and concepts. Share instruction responsibilities as liaison areas, interests, and staffing needs dictate.
• Assist other library faculty with library instruction sessions by helping them prepare ahead of time. Provide training and answer questions on library instruction to other library faculty members.
• Monitor and keep records of all library instruction statistics.
• Schedule library instruction as needed.
• Develop and maintain best practices, policies, and procedures related to information literacy instruction.
• Develop and maintain programmatic assessment models that measure the impact of library instruction on student learning and success.
• Design shared instructional materials in various formats (e.g. electronic, interactive, etc.), including LibGuides and training materials, working closely with other professional staff.

Other Duties

• Serve as library liaison to designated departments, including collection development, LibGuides, department communication, and research support.
• Participate in the Library’s reference program, including in-person, chat reference, and some weekend and evening shifts.
• Participate in outreach events.
• Progress successfully along the promotion and tenure track, including producing creative, scholarly, or intellectual contributions to the field.
• Participate as a member of the university faculty, including serving on internal and campus-wide committees.
• Maintain awareness of trends and advances in the field by attending professional conferences, workshops, meetings, and other events.
• Perform other duties as required.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree from ALA-accredited library program (or equivalent degree and experience).
• Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience working with database searching, the research process and principles of active learning as applied to Information Literacy or other related academic library experience.
• Excellent problem solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• Experience with an integrated library system at an academic library.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
• Strong commitment to public service.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and current trends in library instruction.
• Experience teaching and collaborating with faculty to deliver library instruction.
• Experience with multiple modes of library instruction, including online and asynchronous instruction.
• Experience with survey and assessment methods, including user satisfaction surveys and focus groups.
• Experience with Springshare.
• Experience with Folio (ILS).

Salary/Benefits

This is a twelve-month tenure-track appointment with faculty rank at the Assistant/Associate Professor level reporting to the Library Dean.  Salary will reflect the successful candidate’s qualifications and professional experience.  Benefits include a choice of health and retirement plans, tuition waiver for self, and partial tuition waivers for dependents. Anticipated salary of $55,000-$60,000, depending on the specific education and experience of the successful candidate.
