Job Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications, the Associate Director of Communications and Social Media will lead the College's social media strategy to enhance audience engagement and raise the College's public profile. The Associate Director will also play a key role as a writer/editor for the College. Social media responsibilities include planning and leading College-wide social media campaigns; managing the creation, publication, and digital content updates across Barnard College's social media platforms; and coordinating with members of the Communications team, and other social
media managers at the College, to develop, implement, and evaluate social media content and other communications initiatives. Editorial responsibilities include working with the magazine team to brainstorm ideas for upcoming issues; pitching stories to the creative content team; and writing and editing stories for Barnard Magazine and Barnard.edu. The Associate Director will also co-supervise the Digital Content Coordinator.

Job Description:

Social Media (50%)
  • Create, develop and execute a vision for social media strategy at the College. Direct social media communications efforts across all areas of the College, to and for Barnard's many constituents and audiences. Oversee development of story, photo, and video content for Barnard's social media channels, and writing and editing of social media content in all forms for Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok to best engage, build awareness, convert, and retain target audiences.
  • Co-supervise the Digital Content Coordinator and supervise social media intern(s).
  • Manage main content calendar for social media platforms. Calendar will be populated and updated by the Digital Content Coordinator.
  • Work closely with the department's leadership to ensure an integrated and strategic approach to all aspects of Barnard's social media presence.
  • Oversee Digital Content Coordinator in communication with social media managers across the College who are responsible for content, design, analytics, and maintenance of official Barnard-affiliated social media outlets.
  • Produce monthly and yearly social media reports that highlight follower growth, top posts, interactions, etc. Monitor social data, analytics, trends and issues for digital traffic, and coordinate with the department to ensure optimal online editorial coverage across platforms.
  • Oversee Digital Content Coordinator in monitoring content from Barnard-affiliated accounts and ensure it is consistent with our overall mission and strategic goals.
  • Develop new ideas and campaigns for Barnard's social accounts that move the Barnard mission forward and uplift the main pillars of the College: (i.e. academic excellence, Barnard's relationship with Columbia, New York City, Feel Well, Do Well, etc.)
  • Keep finger on the pulse of new and innovative platforms, channels, trends, and digital initiatives to creatively inform content strategy. Support the department's leadership to provide thought leadership and recommendations on the latest social media trends, new platforms and formats, as well as best practices.
  • Oversee Digital Content Coordinator in tracking online conversations that may impact the College and assisting the issues management team in horizon scanning and online crisis monitoring. Oversee Digital Content Coordinator in developing appropriate responses to comments and direct messages.
  • Build and manage relationships with influencers that drive content creation and awareness of the College.
  • Coordinate with the Associate Director of Digital Communications on other related digital spaces (email marketing, mobile apps, blogs, etc.).


Editorial (50%)
  • Serve as a contributing writer to the Content Creation efforts (Barnard.edu). Produce at least one news story for the web a month, including pitching, reporting, writing, and gathering assets.
  • Collaborate on a joint Magazine-Web piece: Write one long feature and one shorter news piece for the magazine each month that will also appear in news on the website. Attend weekly magazine meetings.
  • Help proof the Magazine in its final stages in print.
  • Help coordinate visual assets, such as images, videos, audio, and graphics for website and magazine stories.
  • Other duties as assigned, including special projects.


Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Highly creative individual with exceptional digital media storytelling skills who can pitch, research, write, and edit long-form news stories and features as well as crisp, pithy social media posts quickly. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills (AP Style); knowledge of grammar and punctuation; strong fact-checking abilities.
  • Record of building a community on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. Demonstrated ability to perform high-quality work and proven success increasing traffic and conversion.
  • Able to work with analytical tools (Google AdWords, Google Analytics, FB and YouTube Advertising, Microsoft, etc.). Proficient in design with Adobe Photoshop, photography, light video editing, and other visual methods of communicating ideas and content. Proficient in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress; work experience with Drupal is a plus.
  • Has a detail-oriented, results-driven, collaborative, optimistic attitude; is self-confident and supportive of others; accepts feedback.
  • Ability to work within a diversely populated organization that is fast-paced and constantly evolving.

  • Possesses excellent time management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and multitask to meet deadlines.
  • A proactive individual who can plan long-term initiatives, and also pivot quickly as needed to respond to urgent issues as they arise


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 4-5 years of experience in communications, social media, blogging, and/or content marketing.
  • Portfolio with current samples that present a range of experience across digital platforms with content focusing on telling a clear brand story (from emotional to functional).
