Overview of Director, Educational Talent Search

The Educational Talent Search grant is a pre-college TRIO program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The Talent Search program identifies and assists traditionally first-generation college-bound students and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assists participants with the postsecondary application process. Talent Search also encourages persons who have not completed education programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or reenter and complete postsecondary education. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. This a 12-month, full-time position. Continuation of the position is dependent on renewal of grant funds. Existing grant is funded through August 31, 2022.

The Talent Search Director reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Educational Opportunity Programs, and will directly supervise the Program Coordinator, (2) Educational Advisors, Administrative Assistant, and student workers. The Director must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and have the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and professional atmosphere. The Director must exhibit cultural agility, with the demonstrated ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. As a pre-college program, the Director must have the ability to build and maintain productive, collaborative relationships with school personnel, community partners, and parents. Some work on the weekend and weeknights is required, plus overnight travel. Routinely travel between PNW campuses.
This position has the flexibility to work in a hybrid environment.

Pay

  • $64,000 - $69,000 depending on experience

Duties and Responsibilities of Director, Educational Talent Search
  • Provide leadership and overall direction to the Educational Talent Search Program.
  • Interpret and apply all applicable campus, state, and federal regulations which impact the program fiscally and programmatically.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all Program staff.
  • Serve as liaison with local school personnel and community groups to insure their complete understanding of the purpose of the Program and to garner their support and cooperation.
  • Strengthen and establish professional relationships with all target school personnel, district leaders, and the university community.
  • Recruit and help to select Talent Search participants by making presentations to students in target schools, eligible parents, and counselors.
  • Develop services and oversee service delivery for students in grades 8-12.
  • Develop and coordinate a recruitment plan for 743 participants annually.
  • Monitor progress toward accomplishment of program objectives.
  • Administer the Educational Talent Search program budget, insuring disbursements are within federal guidelines.
  • Serve as point-person for the sponsor, U.S. Department of Education, regarding budget or programmatic modifications.
  • Assure that all program and participant records are maintained accurately.
  • Compile data, write, and submit annual reports documenting program outcomes and accomplishments for U.S. Department of Education (Annual Performance Report) and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Educational Opportunity Program

Education of Director, Educational Talent Search
  • Master's degree required, preferably in Social Work, Education, Psychology, or related area.
Experience of Director, Educational Talent Search
  • 5 years of professional experience managing diverse and complex programs related to financial aid, admissions, scholarships and/or college advising
  • Experience managing budgets and providing fiscal oversight
  • Experience supervising professional staff
  • Preferred experience in the preparation and oversight of federally sponsored grants

  • Knowledge of barriers to postsecondary education faced by low-income and potential first generation college youth
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Knowledge of academic advising services, development of individualized service plans; college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy services and programming for low-income and first generation college students

  • Ability to collect and analyze data and conduct internal Project evaluations
  • Ability to provide professional leadership and establish effective working relationships, both internally and externally

  • Ability to interpret and implement federal grant regulations and standards
  • Excellent verbal, written, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Comfortable using instructional technology
