Rotate weekly between the laboratory and clinic in a college health center. Medical Assistant experience and certification preferred. The Medical Assistant role is a 12-month position and will report to the Assistant Nurse Manager.
Perform laboratory responsibilities under the direction of the Medical Director, Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager, including specimen collection and processing, routine quality control testing, performance of CLIA -waived testing and documentation of results into EMR .
Assist with general clinical patient care within the Medical Assistant scope of practice under the direction of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or physician. Obtain vital signs, review of allergies, medication, medical/surgical/family/ social history and pertinent health status information, and document in the EHR . Assist the provider with clinical procedures. Qualifications
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills.
  • Effective communication.
  • Typing skills and working knowledge of electronic health records.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • HS diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of a certified Medical Office Assistant program.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a Medical Office Assistant.
  • Phlebotomy experience preferred. CPR certification required.
Responsibilities
Clinic Duties: Support providers and nursing staff :
  • Rooming patients, collecting vital signs and information regarding patient health status, coordinate care (phone calls, appointment changes), documenting clinical interactions in patient chart ( EMR ), providing patient education materials.
  • Assist providers with procedures. Clean equipment for use in for use in clinical areas.
  • Obtain referral information from the clinician for referrals to community resources: specialty care, mental health, radiology facilities, etc. Verify insurance coverage and obtain prior authorization as necessary. Coordinate the appointment with the specialist/facility and send pertinent records. Arrange for transportation and any special needs as indicated. Document all pertinent information in the referral form and keep ordering clinician apprised.
  • Assist Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Laboratory Duties: Perform the defined laboratory functions:
  • Collection of specimens (strep, influenza, Covid-19, urine), phlebotomy, handling of specimens (including use of centrifuge), CLIA -waived laboratory testing, documentation of test results, stocking of laboratory supplies. Manage medical waste for disposal.
