About the Department/Unit

The Academic Support and Access Center (ASAC) supports the academic development and educational goals of all American University students and is committed to promoting access for individuals with disabilities within the university's diverse community.

Summary/Objective

The Academic Coach provides short term intensive academic skills coaching for undergraduate and graduate students from internal Academic Coaching referrals. The Academic Coach will work with assigned students on an individual basis to develop strategies specific to task initiation and task management. Key responsibility centers on delivering short term intensive academic coaching support, while preparing assigned students for self-monitoring and independence.

The Academic Coach supports Academic Coaching through the development and publication of academic resources focused on task initiation and task management for undergraduate and graduate students at American University; and providing academic skills presentations and workshops for students, peer coaches, and University staff.

The Academic Coach collaborates with the academic coaching team and campus partners to develop and implement academic coaching programs and creates data-driven academic coaching services to support retention, student success rates, and graduation efforts.

This position works under general supervision.

Essential Functions
  1. Academic Coaching: Provide individual short term intensive academic skills coaching focused on task initiation and task management to assigned undergraduate and graduate students through one-on-one appointments. Academic Coach will establish an individualize coaching plan, in partnership with the academic coach who initiated the referral, for each assigned student, meeting with students no more than 4 consecutive weeks each academic year.
  2. Administration and Assessment: Serve as an internal academic coaching case manager for assigned students during the period of academic coaching delivery. Maintain accurate records about student academic coaching sessions, student service use, and academic skills presentation and workshop attendance.
  3. Academic Resources: Supports academic coaching in the creation, design, and publication of academic resources and instructional videos for undergraduate and graduate students at American University focused on task initiation and task management. Provide academic skills presentations and workshops for students, peer coaches, and University staff on topics including, but not limited to, task initiation and management.
  4. Other duties as assigned.Represent UEAS at University events to educate prospective students, current students, and the AU community on Academic Coaching services. Participate in working groups and committees to advocate for student needs through the lens of academic wellness.


Work Environment
  • 3-4 days in person, 1 day remote.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience
  • Required experience in student academic coaching focused on intensive task initiation and task management and developing resources to promote academic wellness and self-monitoring.
  • Experience providing academic coaching support to students with diverse learning needs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience
  • Preferred experience providing academic coaching to students at the collegiate level.
  • Prior experience managing a caseload of students.
  • Teaching, presentation, or facilitation experience.
  • Working knowledge of database and scheduling systems.
