Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a Baker to join its Dining and Catering Group. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled individual to join a team that delivers an exceptional dining experience by supporting local farms, preparing seasonally-inspired menus, and by utilizing the strengths of its staff.

Bakers are responsible for production in the bakeshop of a foodservice establishment. The incumbent ensures that the products produced in the bake shop meet the quality standards established by management as well as maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the bake shop.

Essential Functions:

In support of Dining and Catering’s mission and values, the incumbent may be called upon to perform any one or a combination of the following functions listed below:
  • Prepare breads, rolls, quick breads, muffins, and other similar bakery item, as well as pies, cakes, cookies, and other baked desserts, all while adhering to the quality standards and portion controls established by the department and directly related to each unit.
  • Arrange pastry on trays for serving and for special catering events.
  • Perform finishing work and decorating of baked goods.
  • Assist in the ordering process and maintenance of par levels. Receive vendor deliveries, date, rotate and properly store any incoming products.
  • Maintain cleanliness of cooking areas, equipment, freezers, and refrigerators.
  • Use a wood burning oven for production of bakery and related goods.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience:
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline atmosphere.
  • Ability to read, write and follow written procedures.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Strong oral communication skills required, including the ability to effectively communicate effectively with diverse and multilingual populations.
  • Minimum of a high school education.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of previous production baker experience.
Valued but not required skills/experience:
  • A degree from a postsecondary culinary arts training program.

Work Schedule:

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Five days per week, hours vary. Coverage is seven days per week (two days off) while school is in session and can include daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

All dining and catering staff are considered essential personnel to the school and are therefore required to attend work even when the school is closed.
