Assistant Managers for RISD Dining are r esponsible for creating an exceptional dining experience through creative leadership to culinary staff, dining experience associates and utility personnel by providing inspiration, direction, supervision and scheduling . They a ctively foster a team setting, with keen attention to customer and employee needs, customer service, hospitality, culinary, and visual detail.
Essential Functions
- Develops and implements a dynamic dining program by cultivating
shared ideas through regular interaction with staff, students, and
customers. Coordinates marketing and merchandising of menus, meals,
events, and programs to maximize participation and customer
happiness.
- Serves as a direct presence in the dining area of the managed
venue; ensuring consistency in venue appearance and sanitation, as
well as proper ordering/production, stocking, and labeling of items
both convenience and grab-n-go. Directly responsible for keeping
the Dining Experience Associate t team empowered and engaged,
daily, for their entire shift.
- Supports the production process by purchasing foods and
supplies., as needed. Coordinates and oversees the input and
maintenance of menu management systems, labeling, and order guide
forms. Collaborates with Management Team to ensure that convenience
program is achieving targeted goals.
- Responsible for all aspects of day-to-day site and staff
management, including, but not limited to hiring, developing,
training, and evaluating staff. Conducts routine trainings
regarding policies, procedures, cash handling, safety, equipment
maintenance, and customer service. Identifies inefficiencies and
works with all labor sources to remedy using various tools and
techniques including but not limited to meetings, checklist,
performance audits, and goal setting. Clearly sets and communicates
expectations and goals, and gives helpful, routine feedback to
staff to inspire positive performance that is in alignment with
Division and College values for performance management. Completes
performance evaluations and follows up on plans as needed. Assures
that schedules are posted and maintained accurately and in a timely
manner. Completes payroll according to RISD and departmental
policies and procedures. Continually reviews staffing matrix.
Ensures that target labor hours are met.
- Evaluates area to ensure that proper market mix, pricing, and
merchandising are occurring with all items. Takes accurate &
timely inventory. Ensures that assigned dining unit is adhering to
all purchasing/receiving/ inventory management policies and
procedures. Works to assure that site revenues and expenditures are
carefully monitored and consistent with departmental budget
targets. Oversees all cash handling to assure that proper
procedures are being followed. Randomly audits cashiers.
- Sets sanitation/service standards and procedures for assigned
dining area.Monitors compliance with health and safety regulations.
Ensures that work-orders are promptly entered and service is
accurately performed. Monitors all work order charges. Works with
facilities department to manage contracted services (for example,
garbage + pest). Maintains preventative maintenance program.
Evaluates equipment on a regular basis. May make recommendations to
General Manager for capital purchases.
- Creates a positive working atmosphere that fosters
communication throughout RISD Dining and with the campus community.
Acts as a participatory member of the supervisory staff, mentoring
through example.
- Associate’s degree in Culinary Arts, Business or Food Service
Management preferred, or 5 years or more kitchen experience in a
fast-paced, high-volume environment with rigorous quality
standards.
- Two or more years of prior hands-on management e x perience or
proven success in mentoring, guiding, and/or devel oping
others.
- The ability to give and receive effective feedback, excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to develop
positive working relationships with others is required.
- Rhode Island sanitation/ServSafe certification or must be
completed within the orientation and review period.
- Prior cash handling and basic budgeting experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other computer
software, as is prior experience working with POS systems for
retail sales.

Work Schedule
Full-time, 35 hours per week. Five days per week, hours vary. Coverage is seven days per week (two days off) while school is in session and can include daytime, evening, and weekend hours.
All dining and catering staff are considered essential personnel to the school and are therefore required to attend work even when the school is closed.
