The Center for Integrated Research on the Environment (CIRE) invites applications for a Fire GIS Tech (FGT) to join their team. The Fire GIS Tech will serve in an integral role on a team completing a joint project between the Center for Integrated Research on the Environment (CIRE) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The FGT will support daily activities of the team. This position requires work on active military training ranges with potential risk for unexploded ordnance and other related hazards. CIRE’s FGT will work under the direct supervision of the Wildland Fire Support Module at Beale AFB.

Specific expectations and primary responsibilities are:

  1. Use photogrammetry and GIS software to produce historical and present ortho-imagery for Beale AFB’s Area of Responsibility and beyond.
  2. Provide analytic and map making support for Beale Wildland Fire Support Module.


Major Duties Include:

Fire GIS Operations
  • Ancillary responsibilities of the position are serving on prescribed fire and fuels projects in positions for which qualified.
  • During the implementation of prescribed fires plans, fuels projects, and wildfire response plans, monitors fire behavior, evaluates fire effects, identifies potential problems and makes recommendations.
  • Supports wildfire suppression and prescribed fire efforts through the development of specialized mapping tools for the WSM and Beale Environmental.
  • Operates/maintains a variety of motor vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, crew members, etc.
Prescribed Fire/Fuels Management Plans
  • Participates in drafting prescribed fire/fuels management maps and plans following the interagency template.
Required Skills
  • Ability to interact with individuals and special interest groups with diverse and potentially conflicting viewpoints regarding natural and cultural resource management priorities.
  • Metashape and ArcGIS Pro experience
  • R statistical environment or equivalent, experience and/or ability to learn
  • Google Earth Engine
  • Ability to complete physical duties required by this position.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CIRE will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • BS in ecology, geography, environmental science, remote sensing, or related field, or equivalent experience in applied field GIS settings.
Minimum Required Experience
  • BS in ecology, geography, environmental science, remote sensing, or related field, or equivalent experience in applied field GIS settings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in highly structured organizations, such as governmental agencies, the military or corporations, with established lines of authority, procedures and protocols.
  • Operation of GIS equipment in wildland fire and forestry practice is desired.
  • Experience with wildland fire suppression mapping, familiarity with California ecosystems and fire regimes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using GIS software with a focus on fire ecology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with working lands conservation, particularly experience with the DoD environmental conservation.
  • Experience with ArcGIS, GPS mapping and compiling field data.
  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field preferred.
About the Center for Integrated Research on the Environment

The Center for Integrated Research on the Environment (CIRE) is specifically designed and organized to bring world-class applied research methods and sustainable management practices of natural and cultural resources to projects under federal, state, and/or tribal jurisdictions and beyond. One of CIRE's primary goals is to help the Department of Defense maintain mission readiness through successful completion of projects and special tasks. To that end, CIRE directly oversees or has direct access to research laboratories across the University of Montana specializing in water quality analyses, metals analyses, wildland fire, genetics and gene sequencing, soils analyses, wildlife physiology, plant physiology, anthropological and archaeological field-processing and curation, ecological simulation modeling, human environmental health and toxicology, and state-of-the-art GIS, to name but a few. CIRE can also deploy cutting-edge field equipment in the natural and cultural resources from aircraft and remote sensing imaging equipment (hyperspectral, multispectral, thermal), to 3D LIDAR imaging, to aquatic and terrestrial field instrumentation, boats and field vehicles. Collectively, the CIRE Director, Project Managers, and Faculty Partners have published well over 1000 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious international journals and books and are world leaders in their respective fields. In addition to the CIRE and UM Team, CIRE draws from a broad array of professionals in academia and consulting firms to form an extensive network of colleagues and collaborators worldwide.

Position Details

Position Title: Fire GIS Technician (Mapping Technician)

Position Number: New

Department: Center for Integrated Research on the Environment (CIRE)

Work Schedule: 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), 12 months/year. Position requires an alternative work schedule due to wildland firefighting.

Salary: $20.7/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
