The Softball Head Coach reports directly to the Director of Athletics and provides creative vision and leadership for a comprehensive NCAA DIII Softball program.

The Head Softball Coach is responsible for working with the Director of Athletics to oversee the operations and management of the softball program. This includes monitoring the health and well-being of a roster of over 20 student-athletes and developing and building a positive team culture. Administrative aspects of the position include the management of one full-time assistant coach and one part-time coach. On and off the field, a commitment to student development and success and a high level of student and family interaction is essential.

Job Duties:
  • Plans and manages the varsity softball program, including roster management, competitions, operations, overseeing the team strength and conditioning programs, developing and implementing practice and game plans, and instructing players on proper technique and athletic development.
  • Directly manages the varsity softball scheduling, developing a competitive non-conference schedule to complement SAA games.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Athletics and Admissions, manage all recruiting of potential student-athletes for the program, including building a recruiting database and communicating with prospective student-athletes and their families.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Athletics, develop and oversee the softball program budget.
  • Communicates effectively and often with student-athletes and parents.
  • Operates the softball program with the highest integrity while adhering to all NCAA compliance rules and regulations and has demonstrated knowledge of and understanding of NCAA compliance rules and regulations, monitors and supports compliance efforts effectively, efficiently, and with a high degree of integrity.
  • Communicates efficiently and effectively with SAA and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on player performance and academic nominating/voting procedures.
  • Collaborates directly with the Director of Athletic Giving on program development opportunities and priorities.

  • Able to work independently in a highly productive and fast-paced environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of NCAA and SAA compliance rules; Proven leadership in a highly-functioning team environment; Knowledge and experience with college policies.
  • Ability to mediate and use problem-solving skills to conduct alternative dispute resolution.
  • Ability to provide perspective and utilize a proactive style of leadership that encourages teamwork, interaction, and positive culture.
  • Excellent written and communication skills; Full competence in using computer software packages for the office environment.
  • A thorough understanding of the organizational management of the Department of Athletics, including partnership building with students, faculty, staff, parents, and Rhodes alums.
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population and promote a campus climate of inclusion and participation by all students.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills and the ability to deal with complex and sometimes sensitive issues.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships across campus; Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and families to establish and maintain good working relationships.


Required Education

Bachelor's Degree in a related field is required.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of softball coaching experience at the high school or college level.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills are required. Must be student-centered and accessible, working cooperatively and efficiently with students and their families, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Must exhibit professionalism and diplomacy in working effectively with diverse constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize numerous projects requiring attention to detail and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA compliance, rules, and regulations.


Physical Demands:

Medium Work: Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of energy constantly to move objects. Position involves both inside sedentary work and work in different fields and other fitness environments while coaching and training student-athletes. Lifting is required (i.e., set-up of scorers' table, etc.), and some manual labor is expected. In evening and weekend hours in all types of weather, travel is necessary.
