Student Engagement and Campus Life uplifts the co-curricular experience by building communities, promoting holistic education, and cultivating affirming environments.
Emboldened and inspired by Virginia Tech’s Aspirations for Student Learning, the Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL) team to build a student-centered and learning-focused approach to co-curricular and experiential experiences including providing outstanding programs and services to our student and campus community.
The Assistant Director for Student Programs and Principal Engagement Engineer leads a team who help to build robust, engaging programs, events, and experiences for all students. Specific responsibilities include:

• Collaboratively create a robust, significant calendar of events, programs and experiences to engage students at Blacksburg and Roanoke campuses with partners within SECL
• Use assessment best practices to evaluate the needs and wants of all students around experiences and events
• Supervise one coordinator responsible for advising one (1) University Chartered Student Organization (UCSO), the Virginia Tech Union (VTU) and implementing programming

• Serve as the direct advisor for the Homecoming Board of Virginia Tech (UCSO) and a key leader
• Execute large-scale programmatic efforts (GobblerNights) and signature Welcome Week Events
• Serve as an ex-officio advisor to the Virginia Tech Union (VTU). This includes working with the Coordinator, graduate assistant, student organization leadership and members, university policies, internal and external partners, budget oversight, event planning and coordination, and project management
• Utilize a student-driven philosophy to engage students in meaningful ways to ExperienceVT with focus on the Division’s Aspirations for Student Learning
• Apply best practices around financial stewardship of student activity fees to bolster ExperienceVT

Required Qualifications

A collaborative and learning-centered professional with a Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs or related field is required by the start of appointment. Experience in student affairs with demonstrated experience in large-scale programming, advising student organizations, and working with university policy. Demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, and inclusion. Above average communications skills are essential, as well as a desire to work in a teamwork-focused environment, which includes colleagues, and students. Evening and weekend work required.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with computer programs. Budgetary oversight experience. Supervision of full or part-time staff.
