Job Summary
Alcorn State University seeks a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor – Forestry with 40% teaching,30% research, and 30% ’ Extension appointment. The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate students in Forestry, mycology and Environmental Ecology, advise graduate students, conduct mycology related-research and Extension programming. The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funds for research and outreach programs related to ecological mycology, and environmental research with national and global impact. The incumbent must have knowledge and experience of the utilization of the waste wood from Timber Stand Improvement for mushroom production for small-scale, limited resource farmers and woodlands owners in Mississippi.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Candidate must demonstrate knowledge/experience in forestry mycology and forest diseases,forest farming,and understanding of various mushroom substrates obtained from solid llgnocellulose waste. The candidate must be knowledgeable and excellent in research methods,dedicated to teaching,and strong interest and skills to mentor and advise graduate students and train adult farmers. He/she must have knowledge of the 1890/1862 land-grant system and missions. Candidates must have strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills, knowledge of the principles and research development and experimental designs and accountability. Skills in technological communication, Microsoft Office Suite, Statistical programs, GIS in forest health monitoring,and using forest biometric tools.
Essential Job Functions
•Work as a member of the faculty in the School of Agriculture and Applied
Sciences in the area of mycology and forestry;
•Collaborate with other faculty;
•Participate In graduate education through advising graduate students,
serving on graduate committees,and supervising thesis research;
•Teach undergraduate and graduate classes In forestry and mycology;
•Procure grants, contracts, and other funding to support scholarly
teaching/research/Extension and forestry and mycology efforts;
•Conduct rigorous research and Extension programming in mycology and forestry that are supported,in part by extramural funding;
•Provide leadership and strategic planning to establish statewide mycology and forestry outreach;
•Prepare publications and scholarly works, including peer reviewed journal articles, popular articles, Extension bulletins, and fact sheets;
•Build collaborative relationships with mycology and forestry industries in the state and nation;
•Travel to provide support to forestry and mycology programs in counties, and participate in the collaborative work in Mississippi forestry Board and other related organizations;
•Opportunities for growers, with various state and federal agencies and programs;
•Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies;
•Provide assistance with other duties as assigned;
•Must be able to drive to locations around Mississippi and possess a valid driver’s license;
•Ability to use forest biometric tools and conduct forest measurements;
•Other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
•PhD. from an accredited institution in Forestry, Forest Products,Mycology, Agriculture or closely related field;
•Knowledge of how to conduct audience needs identification, program development, experiential learning and evaluation of program results;
•Demonstrated skills In working with limited-resource individuals and the ability to develop partnerships and collaborations;
•Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences, commitment to include diverse voices In program prioritization and planning, and a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming;
•Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs;
•Demonstrated ability to communicate and work with faculty, staff, students, and alumni;
•Demonstrated ability to facilitate experiential learning;
•Demonstrated ability to provide effective academic and career advising;
•Two or more years’ professional experience in forest products/mycology outreach and research.
