Collections Research Preceptor

Reporting to the Director of the Feitler Center for Academic Inquiry at the University of Chicago's Smart Museum of Art, and working closely with the Center’s staff, the Collections Research Preceptor guides, instructs, and mentors undergraduate interns engaged in research, interpretation, and programming about the Smart Museum’s collection. The Preceptor will hold a PhD in Art History or a related field, have expertise in object-centered or collections-focused research methodologies, and have experience mentoring undergraduates. This role is responsible for developing an object-centered research methodology and research plan, leading undergraduate students on research into art objects, developing workshop and roundtable events with relevant faculty and area experts to fill the gaps in research findings (example: art provenance), overseeing students’ presentations of their research in written and oral forms, scheduling and facilitating student access to collection objects, coordinating with relevant UChicago and Smart Museum staff about the presentation, archiving, and promotion of the research work of undergraduates.

The Fellow may teach one course per year in field of expertise, ideally one that draws on the Smart Museum’s collection or exhibitions.

This position is posted as a two-year, full-time, grant funded role that may be contingent on additional funding to continue.

PhD or ABD

Experience

• Advanced research and writing experience in art history or related discipline required
• Experience guiding and mentoring undergraduate research in a teaching or advising capacity required
• Experience coordinating events such as workshops or symposia
• Experience working in a museum, library, or archive setting a plus
