Career Coach – College of Engineering 

Louisiana State University invites applications for the position of Career Coach – College of Engineering.   Reporting to the Manager of Career Preparation, this position functionally serves as a joint team member of the LSU Olinde Career Center and the College of Engineering; provides career coaching to College of Engineering students and alumni; empowers students to explore their major and career through understanding themselves, gaining experience to complement their academic careers, and preparing for experiential opportunities, the job search, and graduate school. Works closely with professional staff and faculty to expand a culture of career throughout the College of Engineering.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Provides guidance, coaching, and support to engineering students throughout their career development process; including major/career exploration; experience building; and professional transition. 
  • Responsible for educating students through one-on-one appointments, presentations, workshops, and print/virtual resources. 
  • Serves as a career liaison to the College of Engineering and designated student population in an effort to develop a culture of career readiness across campus and provide targeted resources and programming. 
  • Share semesterly planning and quarterly impact reports with College of Engineering leadership.

The Career Coach has the opportunity to create new programming and resources focused on increasing engineering students' career competencies and future employability. In partnership with the faculty and staff of the College of Engineering, the Career Coach will work to weave employability throughout the student experience.

 

Collaborate with university and employer partners

Career development does not happen exclusively in the LSU Olinde Career Center. The Career Coach will have the opportunity to create unique programs in partnership with engaged alumni, interested faculty, and recruiting allies to support student learning. 

 

Scale Career Interactions 

Through a concerted effort with College of Engineering leadership, the Career Coach will introduce content, technology and resources to faculty allowing for scalability of career education. The Career Coach will deploy creative solutions to connect with a diverse student population.

ABOUT THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS PRIORITIES:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Student Support (55%) 

Advise undergraduate and graduate students, along with alumni, individually on holistic career development topics, providing front line advocacy and support. Translate department efforts, initiatives, and goals to students through interactions at programs, services, events, and experiences. Serve as the liaison between College of Engineering students and leadership on the Student Services team. 

Academic Integration (30%) 

Collaborate with College of Engineering senior administrators, department chairs, faculty, and staff in an effort to embed career in all levels of student engagement. Build relationships with student organization leadership to facilitate career conversations inside those organizations. Facilitate connections between employer partners and College representatives; namely faculty and student organizations. 

Quality Control (10%) 

Ensures every aspect of programmatic outputs including administrative tasks, implementation, and overall design exudes a high degree of quality. Develops and delivers a plan of each semester’s career related activities and time commitments to the LSU Olinde Career Center and College of Engineering. Submits quarterly reports to LSU Olinde Career Center and College of Engineering on impact and student engagement. Embraces and executes the marginal gains approach and seeks to improve level of all services, events, programs, and experiences in department for continuous improvement every academic year. 

Other Duties as Assigned (5%) 

Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director and direct supervisor. This includes but is not limited to: efforts that support broad divisional/institutional efforts including at least 40 hours per year spent helping divisional initiatives such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Disability Services Finals Testing, other special projects, etc. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of one year of professional related work experience (2 years of graduate assistantship qualifies)

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in higher education administration, college student development, college student personnel administration, or a closely related field
  • Experience working in a university career services office

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS:


As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.

COVID-19 Vaccine Protocol:

LSU requires the COVID-19 vaccine for all students, faculty, and staff or mandatory monthly testing. New employees must either submit proof of vaccination within three (3) days of their official start date, otherwise they will be entered into the mandatory monthly testing protocol beginning in November 2021.
