Coordinator Campus Recreation - Outdoor Program



Job Summary: The Coordinator Campus Recreation – Outdoor Program is responsible for supporting Campus Recreation by directing the Outdoor Program which includes the indoor climbing wall, equipment rental, and Adventure Trip Program. The Assistant Director will oversee multiple aspects of the Outdoor Program, including daily operations, fiscal management, risk management, policies and procedures, scheduling and event planning, and staff management. Duties & Essential Job Functions: 1. Plans, organizes, and implements recreational programming including but not limited to: Climbing Wall operations, Equipment Rental program, and Adventure Trip program.
2. Administers the daily operation of the University Recreation Center indoor climbing wall, and outdoor programming by the employment of staff, the scheduling of staff, payroll, performance evaluation of employees; prepares and maintains a budget; maintains accurate certification record of staff; purchases sufficient equipment to ensure the proper operation of all Outdoor programs; ensures all equipment is properly maintained through weekly, monthly and annual inspections.
3. Ensures consistent training and implementation of procedures for all student employees who enforce risk management practices.
4. Establishes and maintains the outdoor equipment rental, maintenance and cleaning procedures; develops and oversees usage policies that promote safety, care of facility and equal access.
5. Develops responsive and diverse outdoor programs, clinics and trip opportunities. Collaborates with academic departments and university organizations to provide experiential education opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Attends major trips such as Fall Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break.
6. Assesses program outcomes, function, and customer satisfaction through multiple methods including soliciting customer feedback.
7. Assists with promotional materials and social media in collaboration with Assistant Director of Marketing and Technology and student employees to promote and publicize outdoor programs.
8. Represents Campus Recreation by serving on departmental and division committees for student development.
9. Serves as a campus resource for other programs to enhance the use and visibility of the Rec Center as a major campus resource.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Education & Experience : • Bachelors’ degree in outdoor recreation, recreation, physical education or a related field.
• 1 plus years’ practical experience working in outdoor recreation, including experience in teaching and facilitating climbing and supervision for a climbing wall or outdoor recreation program (completion of a graduate assistantship may be included as applicable experience). Preferred Education & Experience: • Masters’ degree in Recreation, Kinesiology, Sport Management or a closely related field or equivalent in experience.
• 2 plus years’ experience in recreational programming at the university level.
• PCIA/AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor Certification.
• Wilderness Education Association: Certified Outdoor Leader/Educator.
• Professional Organization Membership/Involvement (e.g. AORE, AEE, WEA, etc.). Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training: • Wilderness First Responder, CPR, AED.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.
• Must be insurable under the university motor vehicle requirements. Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training: • Climbing Wall Instructor Trainer, Wilderness First Aid Instructor. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: • Knowledge of communications, presentations and interpersonal relationship techniques.
• Knowledge of indoor climbing wall and outdoor programming.
• Knowledge of recreation and student development theory.
• Knowledge of scheduling techniques.
• Knowledge of customer service techniques.
• Skill in staff and student staff scheduling.
• Skill in some or all components of Microsoft Office.
• Skill in developing and scheduling all Climbing Wall and Adventure Trip.
• Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and assess student employees.
• Ability to manage a budget.
• Ability to establish priorities.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations): • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Must have ability to carry 45% of your body weight in a backpack for long periods of time.
• Depending on program requirements, physical demands may require standing and walking for extended lengths of time and may require lifting, pushing, pulling, moving, and carrying items up to 40 pounds.
• Must be sufficiently fit to participate in all sites and logistics related to outdoor activities and maintain ample energy, strength and focus to aid students and instructors.
• Must be able to sleep on ground and camp outside for multiple consecutive days.
• When driving, must be able to focus on safe driving for extended periods. Work Environment: • Work is both indoors and outdoors, and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• This role is an on campus, in-person position.
• Indoor work conditions pose no harmful environmental conditions.
• Outdoor work conditions vary depending on location and length of programs and may involve exposure to various elements including, but not limited to: sun, heat/cold, dust, pollens, precipitation, and other environmental risks.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
