The college

CMC is a comprehensive, public, open-access dual-mission institution offering 136 academic programs ranging from specialized certificates to associate and bachelor’s degrees, a wide range of online, non-credit and lifelong learning courses, as well as extensive concurrent enrollment opportunities in close partnership with neighboring school districts.

Over 15,000 students attend CMC annually, and 40% of degree-seeking students earn a certificate or degree every year. The college’s Latinx enrollment has doubled in six years to 28%, making CMC a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). CMC courses are highly personal and many are highly experiential by design, each with a maximum registration of 25 students.

Colorado Mountain College campuses are located in Aspen, Carbondale, Breckenridge, Dillon, Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs, Glenwood Springs-Spring Valley, Leadville, Rifle, the Vail Valley, and Salida. Of these locations, three are residential—Spring Valley, Leadville, and Steamboat Springs — and students in Breckenridge have access to college-owned off-campus housing. CMC campuses are close-knit communities, on average serving between 1,000 – 2,000 students.

The majority of the college’s financial support comes from local property taxes, not tuition or state revenues. Consequently, CMC is uniquely positioned to be entrepreneurial, nimble, mission-focused, and responsive to community and workforce needs. The position

The Avalanche Science program seeks to train avalanche professionals to work as forecasters in a variety of industries, including avalanche information centers, the transportation sector, guiding organizations, ski patrols, national and state parks, mining operations, and/or the military. Graduates of the program earn a Snow, Weather, and Avalanche Technician certification and an American Avalanche Association (A3) Pro 1 certificate. Students who qualify may also earn an A3 Pro 2 certificate.

The program coordinator is responsible for the administration, leadership, and instruction of the Avalanche Science program. The program coordinator recruits and orients instructors; ensures all courses meet the curricular requirements of both Colorado Mountain College and the American Avalanche Association; schedules and teaches courses; manages all aspects of the program budgets to comply with CMC standards; and oversees logistical and risk management needs of the program. The program coordinator also serves as a liaison with relevant external agencies in the CMC service area to ensure the programs meet the needs of the communities served.

The Program Coordinator is a year-round administrative, non-faculty, staff position with teaching responsibilities. The incumbent must be qualified to be credentialed to teach in the assigned areas or have the ability to become credentialed within 3 years of hire date. The ideal candidate will have strong administrative skills and an entrepreneurial vision for a program that is at the cutting edge of professional avalanche education. Experience in avalanche forecasting, ski guiding, and/or avalanche education are preferred qualifications, but not required.

Pre-requisites for Position (Qualifications Standards)

Qualified candidates must be credentialed to teach in the program, or eligible to be credentialed to teach in the program. Examples of ideal qualifications include:

Education and experience sufficient for the rigors of the position. For example, an Associate’s Degree along three years related administrative experience including program administration, staff and budget management, permitting, and outdoor risk management, or equivalent education and experience that will provide the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the functions of the position.

Teaching in the program would require credentialing according to Colorado CTE requirements. One-year full time teaching experience (or equivalent as part time instructor) in outdoor education, adventure education, or related field. Experience teaching for an institution for higher education preferred, but consideration will be given to those with industry teaching experience (e.g. NOLS, AMGA, AIARE, Outward Bound, etc.). Candidates who don’t meet the credential requirements can still be eligible to teach with a plan to meet the requirements within three years of hire date.

Special Skills or Attributes:
  • Ability to work with industry professionals and organizations as a highly collaborative partner with an eye toward supporting and advancing the programmatic objectives to meet industry requirements.
  • American Avalanche Association (A3) Pro 1 certification (or the equivalent), or the ability to obtain an A3 Pro 1 certificate within the first year of hire.
  • Recreation level Avalanche I and Avalanche Rescue certifications completed and/or renewed within the last 3 years.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder (or higher) and CPR certification, or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications include:
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • 3+ years of experience in higher education administration
  • A3 Pro 2 (or the equivalent) certification
  • A3 Pro 1 Lead instructor status
  • American Avalanche Association Professional Membership
  • Significant continued professional development within the Avalanche Science field
  • 2+ years of guiding, forecasting, or teaching within the greater avalanche industry
  • AMGA Ski Guide certification
  • Experience teaching an American Avalanche Association Pro 1 course.
