Assistant Director of MFA Writing Program

Job Description
Work closely with the director of the MFA Writing Program in planning and overseeing all aspects of the program. Participate in the planning of all events, advise students, oversee student teachers and other student employees, provide guidance and support to student editors of Lumina Literary Journal, and provide high-level administrative support and coordination within all aspects of the program, including recruitment and admissions, registration, the colloquium series and other events.

Essential Duties Summary
Responsibilities:
  • Meet weekly with program director to plan all MFA in Writing events (readings and talks by faculty writers, visiting writers, agents, and editors; student readings; alumnae/i readings, etc). The assistant director’s input is an integral part of this process.
  • Coordinate all readings, panels, and other events (ordering books and refreshments, reserving space, advertising events, processing payments, and so on), and maintain attendance lists for colloquium events.
  • With the director, interview applicants for MFA in Writing assistantships.
  • Delegate tasks to graduate assistants and supervise their work in partnership with director. Meet weekly with graduate writing assistants.
  • Oversee MFA students who are teaching or serving as assistant teachers in local community colleges, high schools, and other venues.
  • Oversee the SUNY Purchase Internship Program.
  • Serve as the support person for Lumina, the MFA in Writing literary journal.
  • Liaise with supervisors at teaching venues, publishing houses, arts nonprofits, and literary agencies and work with program director to expand teaching and literary arts internship opportunities available to our students.
  • With the director, plan and oversee daylong open-house events for prospective students and admitted students.
  • With the director, plan and oversee opening of the year orientation sessions and end of the year commencement activities.
  • Serve as a contact person for writing students, writing faculty, and prospective MFA in Writing students, arrange visits for prospective students, acclimate new faculty hires.
  • Oversee all MFA in Writing materials (course descriptions, registration forms, posters for special events, weekly email event announcements, and so on)
  • Oversee all aspects of the MFA in Writing program’s web presence (maintain the graduate writing website, social media, alumni achievements and the internal writing program page).
  • Represent the MFA in Writing at recruitment events and conferences such as AWP, Brooklyn Book Festival, and the like.


Required Qualifications
Requirements:
  • MFA in Writing preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with contemporary literature required.
  • Familiarity with web editing and publishing.
  • Experience in academic or arts administration preferred but not required.
  • Excellent organizational and writing skills required.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Profound interpersonal skills: Flexibility, forbearance, and general enthusiasm.
