About CTIThe Computing Talent Initiative (CTI), an institute in CSUMB's College of Science, is committed to its vision of ensuring that every California college student who is interested in studying computer science has access to a clear pathway that will lead them from where they are to a career in the tech industry. CTI does this by building and implementing materials, pathways, and supports that prepare computer science students, particularly students from low-income, first-generation, URM backgrounds, to be competitive for opportunities in the technology workforce. A significant part of CTI's strategy is to work with tech companies, nonprofits, and other institutions of higher education to meet its objectives. CTI is a small team (~5 people) who are laser focused on achieving the grant goals, mission and vision. This makes for a dynamic, no-two-days-are-the-same type environment, which does require members of the team to be flexible and comfortable taking on a broad range of tasks. As a team, CTI has identified these guiding principles that drive the operation:● Ownership - You own outcomes and relentlessly pursue the mission.● Iteration - You are focused on constantly learning and improving.● Execution - You do the basics extremely well and believe implementation is as important as (if not more important than) ideas.● Transparency - You build trust by allowing others to hold you accountable.POSITION DESCRIPTION:The CTI team coined the term ‘Learning Engineer' to emphasize that the person in this position will actively build systems, content, activities, and interventions that will enable student learning. Working with the CTI Director and 2 other Learning Engineers, this person's primary focus will be ensuring students are prepared to compete for opportunities in the industry or in academia. To do their job, this person will need to develop a deep understanding of where students are in their knowledge and preparedness; empathize with students' circumstances, challenges, and limitations; develop scaffolded pathways of experiences for students; and inspire them to learn - all resulting in students' measurable learning. The Learning Engineer will go beyond passive production of curriculum material and understand that the onus is not 100% on students to best utilize the content. The Learning Engineer will be interested in current best practices in Learning Science and in testing those ideas in a real-world setting to generate more knowledge about learning systems. This person will make significant contributions to innovative educational models and solutions, not constrained by current approaches/thinking in higher education, that address various challenges including the high cost of college education, broadening participation in computing, and the incorporation of 21st century skills into higher education.RESPONSIBILITIES:
