Job Summary

Primary Responsibilities

An ASL teacher is responsible for passionately providing instruction in the field of American Sign Language, promoting student progress, and creating and fostering a safe, positive classroom environment.

The ASL Instructor will have the following teaching responsibilities:
  • design, offer and enact ASL courses at different ability/skill levels;
  • teach assigned courses in the scheduled format (i.e., in-person or virtually) and times (day and/or evening offerings);
  • use digital and technological tools to support learners in developing their ASL understandings;
  • evaluate and provide constructive feedback to learners enrolled in courses;
  • hold office hours in alignment with policies in the PNW School of Education and Counseling;
  • communicate with SoEC Director and/or her designee to submit grades, attendance and course information in a timely manner and
  • Act as a PNW representative at all times. This includes but is not limited to: being a proponent of PNW and acting in a professional manner in all interactions.
To serve as an ASL Instructor, the ideal candidate will have:
  • a Master's degree in ASL or ASL-related field (Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Deaf Education, etc.)
  • experience as an ASL Instructor who is native or near-native in ASL;
  • teaching licensure or professional ASLTA certification;
  • documented involvement with the Deaf Community and extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture are preferred; and
  • demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching

  • Able to proficiently express self in ASL (i.e., possess a wide-ranging vocabulary to be descriptive, give opinions, hypothesize and discuss abstract concepts)
  • Understand and appreciate Deaf Culture (i.e., its history, politics, literature, art, beliefs and social traditions)
  • Able to affirm, guide, listen and lead as needed
  • Be highly organized, with excellent communication skills
  • Able to work independently, as well as collaboratively
  • Understand and adhere to University policies and guidelines
  • Able to maintain accurate and detailed records
  • Able to use electronic documents and technology to process evaluations and appropriate communications
  • Competency in effective and appropriate online (synchronous and asynchronous) delivery and in-person instruction
Education
  • Master’s degree in ASL or ASL-related field (Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Deaf Education, etc.)
  • Teaching experience and documented proficiency in ASL at the Advanced level or higher
Experience
  • At least three years of teaching experience and expertise in teaching ASL
  • Ability to teach day, evening and weekend classes both in-person and through distance learning


Application Deadline:

Position is open and posted until filled. Employment would begin on August 15, 2022 and continue through December 19, 2022 for the fall semester. Future employment for the spring semester will be considered on an as needed basis
