Job Description:

DIVISION: Advancement

DEPARTMENT: Athletics

BASIC FUNCTION: Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement with a dotted line to the Director of Athletics, the Director of Athletic Development/Senior Associate Director of Athletics is responsible for developing and executing fundraising and related strategies that promote awareness and loyalty to Fairfield University Athletics. This position serves as a member of both the Advancement Division Senior Staff and the Athletics Department Senior Staff. Funds generated are philanthropic and used for the purpose of ensuring that resources are accessible for student-athletes to thrive in all facets of their athletics and educational experience. Athletic development helps to provide student-athletes and coaches with state-of-the-art facilities, operational resources and equipment necessary to compete for championships.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: Ability and willingness to travel is required. Flexibility with weekend and evening hours for special events, athletic events and dinners.

EDUCATION: A Bachelors degree in a related field is required; a Masters degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 7-10 years of demonstrated success in Major Gifts and/or Athletic fundraising or related experience, with at least three years in a management capacity, is required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED: The ability to think strategically and lead effectively by modeling strong, successful fundraising skills is required. Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills. Ability to exercise appropriate, mature judgment, display good character and work independently and responsibly. Effective time management skills are essential. Position requires a team player willing to work and share donor information with all members of the Advancement Division, Director of Athletics and coaches to assist and enhance the Division’s overall development objectives and goals of both areas. Commitment to learning about Fairfield University and ability to effectively integrate as a member of the University community and the Athletic Department is important.

SUPERVISION OF PERSONNEL: Associate Athletics Director/Associate Director of Athletic Development. Assistant Director of Athletic Giving and Events.

REPORTS TO: Vice President for University Advancement. Works closely with the Director of Athletics and Varsity Sports Coaching Staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. The Director of Athletic Development/Senior Associate Director of Athletics is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting donor prospects for athletic teams and associated athletic programs. This position is responsible for developing meaningful and productive relationships in creating and supporting a portfolio of gift donors and prospects, while also partnering with various departments and constituencies on campus.

2. The Director of Athletic Development/Senior Associate Director of Athletics maintains and grows annual fund support as well as capital improvement and endowment support for Athletics and the development, implementation, management, and refinement of programs that engage and encourage participation of alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends in supporting Fairfield Athletics.

3. Working with the Vice President of the Advancement Division and with a heavily dotted line to the Director of Athletics, the Director of Athletic Development will set annual goals, establish priorities, determine and implement fundraising strategies for a variety of teams and programs. This position has key responsibilities for all athletic donor relations and stewardship activities.

4. In conjunction with the Director of Athletics, the Director of Athletic Development/Senior Associate Director of Athletics will play a lead role in the management and continued stewardship of the Athletics Advisory Board as well as other select/sport specific donor groups.

5. The Director of Athletic Development/Senior Associate Director of Athletics is responsible for supervising the Associate Athletics Director/Associate Director of Athletic Development as well as the Assistant Director of Athletic Giving and Events.

6. Comprehensively, the Director of Athletic Development/Senior Associate Director of Athletics and corresponding direct reports are responsible for athletics major gift cultivation, the Friends of Athletics annual fund program and athletics alumni/friends events to increase donor engagement.

7. The Director of Athletic Development will play a collaborative role with the Athletic Director and Coaches to help determine the departmental needs and with the Vice President of Advancement to prepare strategy for effective solicitation.

8. The Director of Athletic Development will also:
  • Act as a responsible and professional public representative of the University at all times at both academic and non-academic University events.

  • Stay abreast of new programs or contemporary methods in the field of athletic development through membership in professional organizations and through building relationships with professionals in a similar capacity at other institutions.

  • Participate in the growth and development of the department, promoting an image of efficiency and courtesy throughout the university community and consistent with the department’s mission

  • Promote safe and secure working conditions. Promoting the proper utilization of equipment and materials, and notifying proper individuals of any unsafe working conditions immediately.

This position is based at Fairfield University’s Fairfield, CT campus and is not eligible for immigration assistance.
