Position Summary Information



Summary
The Library Assistant – Technical Processes assists the Cataloging Librarian, Serials Librarian and the Collection Development Librarian by supporting functions of the Technical Processes Department, including the reception and processing of new resources and the preservation of current resources. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Interview, hire, train and supervise student assistants in processing, shelving, repairing, and withdrawing materials.
  2. Assist the Collection Development Librarian by comparing new items (purchases and donations) with collection holdings to eliminate the duplication of materials.
  3. Receive, unpack, examine for damage, sort and organize new library materials, making certain that each item has a card or paper, listing the title and price, placed at the copyright page, and noting if items are replacements or are intended for special collections.
  4. Route invoices to the Collection Development Librarian when resources have been verified.
  5. Route materials to the Cataloging Librarian in order of priority: new (keeping YBP orders separate), rush, problems, donated, and brief titles.
  6. Assist the Cataloging Librarian by processing cataloged materials for public use.
  7. Inform faculty of new resources when requested.
  8. Search for duplicate or missing materials for the Cataloging Librarian.
  9. Repair library materials, replace spine labels and prepare items for the bindery as required.
  10. Route materials that are too damaged to be repaired to the Collection Development Librarian for decisions on ordering replacements and possible withdrawals, routing items to be withdrawn to the Cataloging Librarian for processing, and withdrawing materials according to library procedures.
  11. Prepare monthly technical services statistics.
  12. Assist in the ordering of library supplies.
  13. Maintain positive communications with library patrons, members of the library staff, and the CBU community.
  14. Provide reference assistance as needed.
  15. Assist with the library’s daily opening and closing procedures as needed.
  16. Participate in the Saturday and Sunday rotation schedules, and in night duty as needed.
  17. Perform light administrative assistant duties for the Library Director and other librarians as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position is responsible for training, assigning work, and otherwise supervising student workers in the Technical Services area of the library. Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student body.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Excellent telephone courtesy, knowledge, and experience.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Ability to develop and maintain record-keeping systems and procedures.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; and requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard, or other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; One to two years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
