Dean College's School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic,
experienced, student-centered educator to teach Introduction
to Sociology during the fall semester. The College seeks
Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active
engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean
create a compelling and professional learning environment for
students of diverse learning backgrounds.
We are seeking an adjunct instructor for
SOC113: Introduction to Sociology. SOC113 is a 3-credit
class. The adjunct pay rate is $3300/section. Adjunct faculty are
expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they
teach. The sociology program provides a course charter with course
objectives as well as sample syllabi. All faculty will be expected
to make active use of the learning management system (Canvas) at
least at a minimum level established by the college.
The course description is as follows:
This course examines the influences of society on human
behavior. Sociologists take a unique perspective in understanding
how our thoughts, actions and feelings are affected by our social
world. Through scientific research, sociology provides us with
valuable information about ourselves and our world that can then be
the basis for advocating for social change. Sociology includes a
range of specialty areas including marriage and the family,
education, politics and economy, gender, race and ethnicity. This
course will introduce you to basic sociological concepts such as
culture, socialization, social class, inequality, and social
- A Master's degree in sociology or related discipline area is
required; PhD preferred.
- College teaching experience preferred, particularly experience
teaching first or second year undergraduates.
- Having strong computer skills, the ability to access the
Internet, the college's online resources and website and a
willingness to be responsive to students via digital tools is a
requirement. Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our
learning management system, and classroom media is necessary.
- The successful candidate will possess expertise in
learner-centered teaching; use of technologies and/or strategies to
enhance pedagogy and the ability to work effectively with a
culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning
