Researches, organizes and implements exhibitions and publications pertaining to developments in contemporary art in all media. Conducts lectures and prepares educational materials pertaining to themes and concepts in contemporary art history.

  1. Initiates organizes and implements exhibitions and accompanying publications in all media. Manages publications related to these projects.
  2. Assists in implementation of exhibitions and publications originated by Director/Chief Curator.
  3. Conducts lectures and seminars, develops teaching materials on themes and concepts related to contemporary art history.
  4. Participates in grant writing, donor cultivation, and general fundraising for exhibitions and publications.
  5. Assist curators of education with the development of educational outreach programs related to exhibitions and publications.
  6. Acts as a liaison to other cultural institutions on campus and in the city for collaborative projects.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

Masters and 3 years experience

Requires application of advanced principles, techniques and theory in a professional discipline or thorough general business management knowledge. Knowledge of this level is typically obtained through a directly job-related Master's degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related work experience

The Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston is a non-collecting organization dedicated to the presentation, celebration, and interpretation of contemporary art and performance. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Assistant Curator organizes exhibitions, performances, and public programs for the Blaffer Art Museum, and assists in the coordination of larger exhibitions and touring shows. This position also organizes joint programming and exhibitions between the Blaffer Art Museum, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, and the School of Art. The Assistant Curator is active in foundations research and grant-writing, as well as communications strategies and community outreach.
  • Originates 2-3 exhibitions of varying scale each year that engage a wide range of diverse audiences locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally
  • Assists the Director & Chief Curator with the organization of exhibitions and accompanying publications for presentations at the Museum and circulation to other venues
  • Coordinates with artists commissioned to create new works for the Museum to ensure exhibitions are on time and meet budget requirements
  • Coordinates and oversees the installation of exhibitions traveling from other Institutions
  • Serves as the curatorial contact person for exhibitions and performances organized by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and the School of Art
  • Works with Curator of Education to create public programs in conjunction with Museum exhibitions
  • Assists advancement personnel to identify and cultivate possible funding sources f or exhibitions
  • Writes, contributes to, and/or edits museum grant applications
  • Supervises and trains curatorial interns on research, correspondence, and publications for the department
  • In consultation with Director, provides creative and editorial oversight of Museum communications and public profile, including marketing, press and public relations, design, and branding
  • Maintains a visible role in the local and national arts community, including developing and maintaining relationships with university colleagues, artists, galleries, collectors, donors, and members of the public
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed for exhibitions, programs, research, events, travel, and more
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
