Job Description

The Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science at Northern Arizona University invites applications for the position of a non-tenure track Lecturer or Assistant Teaching Professor, starting August 2022. The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate courses across a full range of classroom environments, from large introductory lectures to small upper-division courses, and to organize and supervise Introductory Astronomy labs. The large introductory courses offered by the department are, for example, Introduction to Astronomy, Introduction to Planetary Science, Introduction to Indigenous Astronomy, and Diversity in Astronomy. These courses support our departmental program as well as those of other campus units.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in collaboration with department faculty and staff, seek out regular professional development around student success and effective teaching, and perform service roles in the Department. Research and other forms of scholarship activity are not an expectation for this position, and thus release time will not be allocated for them. However, research or mentoring involving undergraduate students are welcome and may be eligible for credit. The Department also welcomes new curriculum development but this is not required.

NAU affirms the importance and critical need for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in higher education and we seek to hire an individual with a strong track record of engagement with DEIJ in their professional endeavors. We require as part of your application inclusion of a one-page DEIJ statement that addresses your values and/or philosophy, accomplishments, experiences, education, and training with DEIJ. We highly encourage the integration of one or more of the following considerations into your statement to be as specific and concrete as possible in any examples you provide.
  • Past and future integration of DEIJ aspects and issues into your professional activities, and any impact of that DEIJ inclusion on the institution, your discipline, and the larger community
  • Professional, industry, and/or community service that contributes to building respectful and inclusive organizational climates, advances institutional recruitment of marginalized people, and raises awareness of DEIJ issues
