Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Opportunity

SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES: The research interests of the Manetsch laboratory focus on organic, bioorganic, and click chemistry addressing diverse aspects of medicinal chemistry of anti-infectives. Using synthetic chemistry in conjunction with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry detection (LC-MS and LC-MS/MS), the Manetsch laboratory aims to the discover and develop agents or probe molecules to target malaria, amoebic, or bacterial infections. Molecule designs of anti-infective agents orbit around druglike molecules or structurally complex natural products. The laboratory collaborates with academic groups, industry, and public-private partnerships in the US and across the world.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record in organic chemistry with a focus on small molecule and/or natural product synthesis and characterization. They will be analytically minded, systematic and embrace data-driven decision making. The postdoctoral Research Associate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design and synthesize novel anti-infective agents to support the development of next-generation anti-malarial, anti-bacterial, or anti-amoebic agents.

The primary responsibility is to conduct structure-activity and structure-property relationship studies to develop anti-infective agents with pre-clinical or clinical potential. They will assist the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants. The postdoc is expected to write research papers, present research at meetings, contribute to research proposals, manage research data and software, and assist in mentoring students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or similar scientific area preferably with a focus in synthetic chemistry of small molecules or natural product. They have a deep understanding and knowledge of chemical reactivity and selectivity. The candidate should be proficient at designing and carrying out lab experiments and creating ideas for future work plans. They should have the experience in creating and writing technical proposals. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research projects, the candidates should have good interpersonal skills and a sustained tendency for collaboration.

QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate should have strong problem-solving skills and be highly motivated. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology or a closely related field. The best candidates will have excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.

HOW TO APPLY: Applications should contain a cover letter briefly describing candidate's background and specific research interests, a full CV with a publication list, Ph.D. completion date, and the names and contact information for three references who might be contacted for recommendations. Review of applications will begin immediately. The position will be available starting immediately, and the appointment will be for two years, and may be extended for an additional 1-2 years, depending on continuation of funding and regular progress evaluation.
