The division provides the marketing tools and experience that push the university's brand forward. Our expertise includes media relations; brand development; content strategy; web communications and social media; writing, editing, and design; photography; and video.


The Marketing Account Director position is part of University Communications and Marketing and reports to the Assistant Vice President for Marketing. This position is the lead point of contact for campus partners to develop and implement marketing strategies and manage integrated marketing efforts to support the university’s strategic plan goals. This position serves as a project leader for the UCM team and is the main liaison between external divisions and internal team members. They work on strategy development, planning, project management and brand integration, ensuring that the university brand strategy is considered in all marketing initiatives. This position collaborates and coordinates the work of the UCM team (including: writers/editors, designers, production, video, photography, and digital professionals), with advertising/media agencies and other outside vendors to implement developed strategies.

Essential Functions
  • Account direction for university initiatives, institutional commitments, and key campus partners: Develop relationships with key partners, including leadership in schools, divisions and/or departments (including colleagues at all levels: Deans, AVPs and VPs) to better understand division objectives and how they complement and support established university objectives.
  • Project Team leadership: Lead the strategic efforts for internal and external marketing initiatives, and guide creative, PR, and digital teams (as applicable) to ideate and execute using creative brief, institutional goals, and competitive insight; Manage development and implementation of marketing initiatives including creative, budget, production schedules, approvals, and execution.
  • Brand and Reputational Marketing: Support AVP and VP of Communications as part of brand strategy team to lead and implement brand initiatives that positively position American University with higher education peers, the AU community, and prospective audiences; University brand initiatives range from on-campus speakers that align with the Challenge Accepted mission and message to university partnerships with DC-based sports franchises to amplify the AU brand message through the region.
  • Budget oversight: Present thoughtful and fiscally-responsible marketing and media recommendations to clients; Work closely with production manager (and others) to ensure that budgets are being met and communicated; Maintain project budgets, as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Although this position does not oversee any direct reports, the person in this position will be required to lead project teams that could include as many as five to seven professionals.
  • The person in this position will interact with individuals at all levels of the institution from deans and cabinet members to alumni, donors and students.
  • They must build productive, professional, and respectful relationships with university stakeholders and outside vendors and provide brand and campaign guidance while maintaining collaboration.
  • This person must be able to respond strategically and act quickly to provide marketing support and guidance for new, or unplanned university initiatives that align with institutional priorities.
Work Environment
  • This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Marketing and works closely with communications, marketing and/or enrollment contacts at American University’s Colleges, Schools and Divisions as well as colleagues in University Communications and Marketing (UCM), including the other UCM AVPs and VP for Communications.

Required Education and Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field is required.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible work-related experience, including experience in a client service role.
  • Marketing and advertising experience is a must.
  • Proven ability to research, plan, manage and analyze complex projects from start to finish.
  • Ability to evaluate marketing challenges and use knowledge and insights in order to develop and implement marketing strategies is a must.
  • Knowledge of marketing approaches including integrated marketing and content marketing strategies.
  • Familiarity with developing and launching paid media campaigns, including print, TV, radio, social media, digital, and emerging platforms (ie: OTT).
  • Proven ability to work with clients and creative team members on a variety of projects under tight deadlines.
  • Creative, strategic thinker that can effectively collaborate with other creative colleagues.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, responsive, and proactive self-starter
  • Knowledgeable, confident speaker and presenter.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Professional experience with fundraising campaign strategy is preferred.
  • Higher education experience is a plus
