Position Details

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
This is a non-tenure-track 12-month faculty librarian position that provides a wide range of professional reference, research, and instructional services to meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of students, faculty, and other affiliated users of the College of Osteopathic Medicine ( COM ). The faculty are developing a collaborative integrated model of curriculum. The librarian will be an integral part of the group. In addition, the librarian will have the full support of the SHSU Newton Gresham Library ( NGL ), which is based at the main campus in Huntsville, TX.

Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work with students, faculty, and staff in locating and interpreting library resources in medical subject areas. This includes the use of the OPAC, electronic and printed resources which will satisfy information needs.
  • Has the opportunity to participate as an active faculty member and resource for EBM (evidence based medicine) curriculum and teaching sessions.
  • Prepare materials to facilitate access to collections including bibliographic guides, handouts, web- based tutorials, and content/subject modules that assist with small group and active learning curricula as well as supporting research endeavors.
  • Provide formal and informal bibliographic instruction and/or research assistance, to groups and individuals as needed or as assigned.
  • Coordinates reserve activities with NGL Access Services.
  • Processes as needed outgoing and incoming mail related to Distance Learner Services borrowing including USPS, commercial delivery services, and TEXpress courier.
  • Participates in a virtual reference service.
  • Works with SHSU IT@Sam Client Support to provide formal and informal instruction in the use of presentation software, word processing, etc. to students.
  • Serving as the bibliographer for collection development supporting the College of Osteopathic Medicine and recommends materials for purchase/subscription.
  • Serves as an active faculty member of the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • Collaborating with the Instruction Librarian and the other Research and Instruction Librarians to design and develop outreach services to meet information needs of students and promotes awareness of library services and resources.
  • Interprets library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Inspects new library materials and informs appropriate faculty and students of those items that could be useful in their courses or research. Works with faculty and students of the COM to develop a living and accessible Health Library pertinent to the needs of the students.
  • Assesses the latest technologies to see if they meet the needs of users and effectively integrates them into day to day practice.
  • Promotes the use of the library and the development of a stronger collection through contacts with faculty, staff and students.
  • Actively develops access systems for students on clinical rotations across Texas as well as adjunct faculty.
  • Develops a variety of public relations and marketing activities that promote library services and resources, within a team environment.
  • Participates in assessment of library services.
  • Keeps abreast of activities and changes in the profession by attending meetings; reading professional literature and developing research interest.
  • Works with other public service personnel to provide coordinated information services.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements for the Position
Master’s degree in library/information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association ( ALA ). Experience Required for the Position Other Requirements for the Position
Qualifications – Preferred
  • One or more years of academic health sciences library experience, preferably working with medical school faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience working with medical school faculty, staff, and students
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in the physical, life, health, or related sciences
  • Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals ( AHIP )
  • Demonstrated teaching skills, with an understanding of instructional design principles.
  • Experience building instructional material using Springshare LibApps tools, and Blackboard or other comparable learning management systems.
  • Three or more years of academic health sciences library experience, preferably working with medical school faculty, staff, and students.
  • Familiarity with medical vocabulary
  • Experience providing library outreach services.
