Purpose of Position
Northern Kentucky University is a dynamic community, and Communication Specialists must be able to work in a fast-paced environment to quickly and creatively share the NKU experience. Communications Specialists generate stories and create written content for the university’s marketing and communication channels.

They work with faculty, staff, students and alumni to highlight the NKU experience and engage all members of the community. Communication Specialists create stories for the university website, create and edit the content on NKU webpages, write talking points and speeches, craft communications to internal audiences, generate e-newsletters, help to craft marketing copy for printed materials and assist with public relations and social media as needed.

Communication Specialists may utilize their own photography and video to tell NKU’s stories. Primary Responsibilities
Communications Specialists are responsible for producing interesting stories with an NKU connection and collaborating with team members to engage a wide variety of audiences. They will work with the university’s seven colleges to identify stories that promote the NKU experience and brand. This includes content for NKU’s website, print magazine, news, social media, podcasts, and some marketing and advertising efforts. They will work with the Director of University Communications to produce talking points and speeches for the Office of the President. Familiarity with digital marketing tools including the Adobe Creative Suite, social media channels, writing for Search Engine Optimization and tools to update web pages is a plus.

High Editorial Standards – As a proofreader, Communication Specialists work to ensure the university’s editorial standards are being followed in all aspects of storytelling and communications, including checking for correct style, grammar and strong writing. Our goal is to inspire readers to become connected to or stay involved with NKU . Working knowledge of AP Style is essential.

Communications Specialists also support the university’s Marketing and Web & Digital Strategy teams with writing and proofing material as needed. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with a major in journalism, communication, digital media or English.

Strong AP style knowledge. Proficiency in web-based platforms, browsers, HTML and related technologies. MS Office proficiency.

Ongoing desire to keep up with the latest trends and technical skills and the proven capability and desire to learn quickly.

An understanding and appreciation for marketing strategy and sound news judgment. Minimum Education Bachelor's Degree Preferred Education Bachelor's Degree Minimum Experience 3 years Salary TBD Pay Grade S71
