Position Summary

The University of Georgia’s Department of Horticulture ( www.hort.uga.edu ) is seeking applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Horticulture with responsibilities in breeding vegetable crops. The position will be located at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus, Tifton, Georgia. The position is a nine-month, tenure-track appointment, with an 80% Research and 20% Extension appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) develop a local, state, regional, national, and internationally recognized program that will use traditional and modern plant breeding techniques to address high priority issues in vegetable breeding, 2) procure extramural funding, publish research findings, and regularly participate in other scholarly and departmental activities, 3) establish an active and sustained research program that includes supervision of graduate students, 4) collaborate with the existing UGA Vegetable Team, the Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, the Precision Agriculture team, and other faculty within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the College of Engineering, and related disciplines, 5) interact effectively with growers, industry leaders, government agencies, as well as other disciplines.

The successful candidate is also expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program in one or more of the following areas: 1) Designing, editing, or building genes, pathways, and biological systems to improve traits (e.g., rapid growth, yield, resistance to pests and diseases, nutritional value, etc.) of vegetable crops; 2) Release germplasm or cultivars of vegetable crops suitable for production in Georgia, the Southeast US, and beyond; and 3) Lead cross-disciplinary proposals and projects aimed at improving vegetable production in the State of Georgia.

Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to provide training, resource materials and technical assistance to county Extension agents and vegetable stakeholders. Frequent automobile travel to a variety of sites, including many rural locations, is expected of this position.

About the College/Unit/Department

The Department of Horticulture at UGA consists of 29 faculty members situated in a stimulating, multi-campus environment with an excellent reputation in research, extension and teaching. The three campuses of the University of Georgia (Athens, Tifton and Griffin) are multidisciplinary, multi-agency facilities with access to well-equipped research farms throughout the state. We improve the environment, health and well-being of citizens in Georgia and around the globe using innovative research, experiential teaching and outreach to increase the profitability and sustainability of horticulture. We increase public awareness of the positive aspects of horticulture, educate the horticulture workforce, and proactively shape the future of horticulture.

Location: The position will be located at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus, Tifton, Georgia, which is located within a 3-hour drive from 4 flagship college campuses and is home to 105 scientists and more than 200 support staff. On-campus resources include office, laboratory, greenhouse, agricultural machinery, the Tifton Vegetable Park, and other irrigated research farms. The Tifton Campus is located in one of the most important regions for vegetable production in the Southeast U.S., with a farm gate value of $1.2 billion and over 40 different vegetable crops produced.
