The College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities ( CASSH ) includes departments and programs in the humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary studies, as well departments in the School of Visual and Performing Arts ( VPA ). CASSH / VPA continues the established liberal studies tradition of providing curricula leading to the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree.

Position Summary

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse invites applications for an Associate Lecturer whose primary responsibilities will be managing the Theatre Arts Scene Shop and teaching classroom sections of Theatre Appreciation.

Under general supervision of the Department Chair and the Faculty Technical Director, a person in this position is responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in Theatre Appreciation and supervising the Theatre Scene shop labs to ensure safe, accurate, and timely construction of scenic elements according to drawings produced by the Technical Director. The supervisor will also be expected to organize and maintain the scene shop—which duties may include stocking hardware, purchasing materials, and arranging for tool repair.

In addition to preparing for and holding classes [face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online], teaching evaluating students’ work, assessing student outcomes, maintaining appropriate records, and holding office hours. In addition, workload may involve advising students and/or providing other service to the department. Other duties may be assigned by the chair or dean.

Required Qualifications
  • MFA or appropriate graduate degree in theatrical production required by time of appointment [except in rare circumstances where post-baccalaureate certification or licensure or a baccalaureate plus experience can be established as appropriate qualifications for the teaching position].
  • Strong scenic construction and theatre technology background.
  • Experience in drafting and preparing budget estimates.
  • Ability and willingness to pick up and deliver construction materials and lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience teaching at the college level.
  • All persons hired for Academic Instruction will be required to submit all of their official copies of their transcripts to Human Resources upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with welding or stage rigging. Management experience as a technical director or assistant technical director.
  • Knowledge of Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Excel, and Google Docs.
