The Military and Veteran Success Center (MVSC) serves veterans, active-duty service members, reservists and dependents. As our students move on to the next chapter of their lives, we want them to succeed and achieve their academic goals.  MVSC is here to support students using their veteran education benefits and military tuition assistance.  MVSC provides academic advising and is committed to providing excellent customer service and assisting students in overcoming challenges that could hinder progress to graduation.

This position funded through September 30, 2025 by a US Dept. of Education Title V La GENTE grant. Funding is dependent upon renewal of the grant and may be extended based on university needs and budget sustainability.


Description of Job

The primary role of the Academic Success Coordinator is to ensure that students receive a positive and holistic experience during their academic career with regard to advising, policies, coursework, career exploration, and extracurricular activities. This position seeks to provide students with a smooth transition into higher education via personal and regular contact so that they do well academically and socially and stay enrolled at CSU-Pueblo. This position is also responsible for ensuring veteran education benefits are certified, DOD and VA policies are followed and the University is in compliance.


Primary Duties

Case Management
  • This position provides military and veteran students pursuing degrees with academic program advising, assistance with registering for courses, monitoring, and maintaining a caseload of new and continuing students for a minimum of two academic years.
  • This position will meet individually and in groups with students to develop structured Student Success Plans and DARS reports and will track student academic progress.
  • Utilize Starfish Enrollment Management System to identify students at-risk and provide academic interventions as well as make referrals when elicited.
  • Conduct individualized follow-up sessions to provide support to students. Create and present workshops on university policies, degree audits, career exploration, and course registration.
  • Meet students one-on-one to help them navigate the registration process including selecting and registering for classes. Facilitate student connections with other departments on campus including the career center, peer mentors, and the academic department of their major and student financial aid.

School Certification Official 

  • This position will assist students and their families in navigating the use of their veteran education benefits and military tuition assistance from the Department of Veteran Affairs and the Department of Defense.  
  • This individual will be responsible for preparing and certifying VA education benefits to include reporting student status and eligibility changes to the VA.   
  • Prepares and analyzes reports. Assists with auditing requirements and ensures compliance of all student files.  
  • Keeps students informed on VA education benefit regulation and policy changes and is the liaison between students, other University teams and the VA. 
  • This position performs duties with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, customer service, compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies and analyzing VA regulatory changes and evaluation and monitoring student eligibility for benefits processing.
  • This position serves as a student’s key point of contact regarding the student’s VA benefits.


  • Work closely with the academic departments and faculty mentors to ensure that students are taking courses within their majors.  
  • Regularly attend department meetings and work individually with faculty and staff from appropriate offices to ensure that related academic by caseload of students are satisfactorily resolved.  
  • Work with Department of Veteran Affairs and DOD to ensure certification of education benefits.

Assist with registration and recruitment events on and off campus as well as through tele-counseling and phone registrations.

Data Collection 
Collect both quantitative and qualitative data related to each student, major and caseload. Generate reports based on collected data. Conduct program evaluations. Report results of evaluation. Contribute to end­ of-semester and annual reports on student success, persistence and retention.

Ancillary Duties
Other duties as assigned, such as student supervision and serving on university committees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Willing and able to complete and maintain School Certifying Official credential with the Department of Veteran Affairs
  • Understands the impact of cultural and military service on learning
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a faced paced environment
  • Ability to work with technology including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in education, communications, psychology, or social work
  • Knowledge of and experience with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
  • Experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience with VA education benefits and Tuition Assistance for Active-Duty Service Members
  • Experience working successfully in a team environment and with a diverse population

Condition of Employment
