Faculty Position in Animation at Assistant or Associate Professor Level

The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at NTU, Singapore, invites qualified academics to apply for a faculty position as Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track). Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  1. Proven ability to supervise students’ animation projects from idea generation, conceptual research, visual research, visual development, animation production through to final rendering and presentation.

  2. An enthusiasm to lead students in the expansion of animation beyond traditional media. This may include animation for games, VR, installation, AR or any interactive/immersive digital media that hold potential for animation as a form of creative communication. This would form a welcome asset for successful teaching in an increasingly interdisciplinary program that also aims to further integration of teaching with ongoing research.

  3. Sufficient experience and awareness of the full range of animation media formats, including drawn and digital 2D, 3D computer animation, stop motion, motion graphics, installation and animation for games.

  4. The ideal candidate would be a practicing high-calibre-expert in one technique (e.g. 2D animation) but simultaneously be familiar with production pipelines and conceptual approaches across a broad spectrum of animation techniques and related media.

  5. We are looking for a person with particularly strong development skills that enables them to assist students with content creation on the narrative and visual level. The understanding of overarching artistic concepts that will be negotiated through critical thinking is crucial. It must be combined with a high understanding ability to explain and teach them through word and image.

  6. Appropriate experience of teaching animation and developing animation curriculum, following established pedagogical approaches, at a tertiary level.

  7. A track-record and enthusiasm for research in the animation field, including any forms of publications such as conference publications, journal publications, screenings or exhibitions.

ADM offers a studio-based professional education in a comprehensive university setting, providing students the knowledge and skills needed to develop and produce groundbreaking artworks and scholarly activity. ADM also promotes Singapore’s creative culture and identity and is positioned to play a central role in the transformation of Singapore into a regional center of media and creativity. Currently, ADM offers a BFA program with six concentrations – Digital Filmmaking, Digital Animation, Digital Photography, Interactive Media, Visual Communication, and Product Design. A rigorous first-year Foundation program including Art History and Theory, paired with a studio interdisciplinary experience and innovative development in new technology and media is common to all. The four-year programs are designed to be relevant regionally and globally and are structured to meet the highest professional and academic standards worldwide. The School also offers MA and PhD by research across all areas of the school including animation. ADM provides excellent opportunities for funded faculty research, and excellent facilities for creative production.

The BFA in Media, Animation pathway, emphasizes the fine art of animation with the highest industry standards, actively integrating traditional techniques with contemporary digital processes to encourage the development of new narrative and expressive forms. The program focuses on independent animation production in the cultural context of Southeast Asia and fosters individual authorship while also contributing to the growth of the animation industry in Singapore, Southeast Asia and globally. The programme embraces a strongly multicultural and international approach, and emphasizes imagination, innovation, and critical thinking. It is engaged with emerging forms of animation including animation for games, visual effects, installation and performance. The program welcomes applications from artists whose work incorporates world art and ethnographic media as a way to extend animation to new forms of global visual language communication.

The successful applicant will contribute to the School’s development of the undergraduate and graduate curricula as well as to research within the arts, design and media disciplines. Applicants should possess a strong background in professional animation production and also university-level teaching experience, including mentoring of final student practical projects or theses. A strong international reputation in the field, including a significant exhibition or publishing record is a priority. A terminal, MFA or PhD degree, is expected. In lieu of an advanced degree, the applicant must possess significant professional and academic experience in their area of expertise commensurate with appointment at the senior level of the University.

International applicants with a background in transdisciplinary and multicultural practice and research are encouraged. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research/creative production profile, as well as a commitment to teaching and service to the school. An open, collaborative approach, and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school and university, is a priority. This position will also involve administrative activities and committee participation. The salary and level of appointment offered will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
