Job Description:

Job Summary

The Archives and Distinctive Collections Department seeks a Project Archivist for the CLIR-funded project, Digitizing the Deaf Catholic Archives: A project to open and provide access to a collection of print and (audio)visual materials which document the history, culture and religious education of Deaf Catholics in the United States and beyond. This project will digitize key components of the Deaf Catholic Archives (DCA) in order to make these unique materials discoverable, accessible, and usable to the Deaf community as well as researchers interested in the material. The collection provides insight into the history of Deaf culture as well as an understanding of how Deaf Catholics practice their faith (culturally) in new ways, when traditional methods are insufficient.

The DCA Project Archivist, reporting to the Head of Archives & Distinctive Collections, will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the project including preparing materials for digitization, coordinating with the digitization vendor, reviewing digital files and uploading to the institutional repository, managing metadata creation, creating promotional materials and developing outreach opportunities.

This is a 20 month appointment with a desired start date of September 1, 2022.

Major Areas of Responsibility
  • Prepare materials for digitization including ensuring box and folder lists are accurate and boxes are properly labeled.
  • Coordinate shipments and transfer of digital files with the digitization vendor and troubleshoot any potential issues.
  • Create finding aids for the collection in ArchivesSpace.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Scholarship Librarian in developing workflows to review files and upload into CrossWorks, the institutional repository.
  • Coordinate obtaining permissions to publish materials in which copyright is held by other organizations. Maintain a tracking system for this work.
  • Develop, document, and implement procedures for metadata creation.
  • Create a web presence for the collection using the exhibit module of the IR.
  • Maintain statistics, reports and other metrics.
  • Contribute to departmental outreach activities by creating presentations and social media posts highlighting the project.
  • Train and supervise the project's student assistants
  • Other duties and projects as assigned in relation to the DCA Project.



Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • An ALA accredited MLS, MA in Archival Science or equivalent.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language preferred but not required.
  • Experience with digitization and familiarity with planning, managing, and delivering large and complex digital projects in an academic setting. Knowledge of digitization best practices.
  • Experience with processing and describing manuscript collections
  • Knowledge of content standards, metadata schema, controlled vocabularies, and preservation standards such as DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, and MODS.
  • Experience with supervising student workers.
  • Experience with platforms for the discovery, management, and preservation of archives and digital collections, such as bepress, Preservica and ArchivesSpace.
  • Ability to build and engage an active intellectual community, including working collaboratively and building partnerships across disciplines and with people at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, acquire new skills and solve problems.
  • Ability to establish priorities and work independently, creatively or collectively as a team in a rapidly changing, complex environment.
