DIVISION OF MUSIC The University of Central Missouri’s Division of Music enjoys ample teaching and rehearsal space and includes a 385-seat recital hall and a 1300-seat concert hall on the Warrensburg campus. Recently-approved renovations to our facilities include a major upgrade to the music technology studios allowing for state-of-the-art recording capabilities and collaborative projects across the School of Visual and Performing Arts and the university at large. Access to our Missouri Innovation Campus (Lee’s Summit, MO) allows for unique outreach and professional opportunities, and the cultural hub of downtown Kansas City is less than one hour away. The marching band enjoys complete access to a full synthetic turf practice field with a high vantage point tower and adequate indoor facilities during periods of inclement weather.

Located within the School of Visual and Performing Arts, the Division of Music offers the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music (emphases in Performance, Music Technology, Piano Pedagogy, and Jazz-Commercial Music), Bachelor of Music Education, and the Master of Arts degrees. We are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the North Central Association, and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. We share a long and storied history of providing strong music foundations to our graduates. Additionally, faculty are encouraged and supported hy the administration in their innovative thinking and collaboration to produce future-focused musicians who will serve and lead the profession upon graduation. With 19 full-time and 16 part-time faculty, including several Artists-in-Residence from the Kansas City Symphony, and approximately 200 music majors, the Division of Music at UCM is the third­ largest in Missouri and is the state’s first All-Steinway School. DIRECTOR OF BANDS —Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands, music faculty, graduate assistants, staff, and community members to lead a comprehensive bands program. With the Assistant Director of Bands, conduct the two concert ensembles (Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands) and assist with the marching band (Marching Mules). Actively recruit and work with music faculty to develop and refine outreach and recruiting activities to expand the music program at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and conducting. Collaborate with ensemble directors and music education faculty to support the music education program. Manage advising and recruiting for the summer Master of Arts in Music program. Engage with the local and regional community to support UCM’s mission as the major arts destination in Johnson County and the surrounding region. Assist with implementing the annual Festival of Champions and other outreach events. Other duties may be assigned to meet departmental needs according to the candidate’s areas of strength.

  • Demonstrated achievement of a high level of artistry as a wind conductor, evidence of successful teaching of wind-ensemble literature, and strong administrative skills required.
  • Demonstrated success in community engagement required.
  • Secondary teaching experience is desirable.
  • Preference given to candidates with previous experience as a Director of Bands at the university level.
