The MATESOL Program at the School for International Training (SIT) Graduate Institute invites applications for a full-time faculty position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in the area of Applied/Educational Linguistics,  Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education, with a focus on plurilingualism, socially responsible education, equity and inclusion. The successful applicant will be responsible for on-line and classroom teaching, as well as for supervising the students’ professional practicums and independent professional projects. The faculty member will also participate in the further development of the MATESOL low-residency Program and a Global Master’s degree and other educational programs, serve on academic and institutional committees, and engage in research and innovative educational practice. The faculty member will teach a variety of courses with a special emphasis on English Applied Linguistics (EAL), Second Language Acquisition (SLA), plurilingual pedagogy, and politics of English.

Beginning with the training of TEFL Peace Corps volunteers in the 1960s, the SIT MATESOL Program has had a long and rich history of experiential teacher education where students and faculty are seen as co-explorers and where everyone fully draws on their prior linguistic and cultural lived experiences. Faculty are deeply committed to the development of their students both as teachers and as individuals. Faculty collaborate on the planning and implementation of the program. They are also committed to reflecting on and learning from their own practice as teacher educators. They engage in intensive professional practicum supervision, which allows  faculty to continually update their understanding of varied and changing contexts around the world.

The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research, a rich personal experience with learning and exploring languages, and clearly articulated research interests ideally grounded on their experience teaching and conducting research in a variety of contexts with different communities of practice.

We are interested in applicants with a scholarly focus on language education that taps into the full communicative repertoires of learners and disrupts existing language hierarchies and inequities. Commitment to a social justice agenda is a must. We will be looking for applicants who can continue  our program’s tradition of rich, egalitarian, experiential learning and innovative teaching and teacher development. We are educators who embrace plurilingual and multimodal pedagogies and          challenge deficit framings of language education, and we will be seeking a colleague who can actively engage with progressive pedagogies, not just at the level of conceptualization and exploration but that of implementation as well.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Applied Linguistics or Second Language Acquisition, Educational Linguistics, or Multilingualism, Language and Literacies Education or related areas
  • Demonstrated success with both face-to-face and distance education teaching models
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Experience in or demonstrated potential for teaching and advising in an institution committed to      student-centered, experiential education. Prior experience teaching at a graduate level is both expected and desirable.
  • Experience teaching courses related to language development and language education
  • Evidence of accomplished research studies and clearly articulated research agenda.
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, or monographs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Rich cross-linguistic and cross-cultural experiences
  • Fluency in at least one language in addition to one’s native language

Applicants must submit a cover letter documenting qualifications for and interest in the position, a current CV, statement of educational philosophy (address how you apply experiential learning pedagogy and address diverse students’ needs in your graduate teaching; please include examples from both online and face-to-face teaching), and the names and contact information of three academic references. Candidates selected for an initial interview will be requested to submit three letters of reference.
