GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

UNIT DESCRITION:

The Western Pacific Tropical Research Center is the research arm of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences of the University of Guam. WPTRC scientists explore topics that are germane to the wellbeing of the environment and people throughout the region. This includes research encompassing tropical agriculture, aquaculture, invasive species, plant pathology, soil health, terrestrial ecology, and more. WPTRC receives funding from several sources and contains well-equipped laboratories, plant-growing facilities, and four research stations.

CHARACTER OF DUTIES:

The Assistant/Associate Professor in Restoration Ecology designs, conducts, and supervises high-quality research under the supervision of the Associate Director of Research at the College of Natural and Applied Sciences of the University of Guam. This position is part of a strategic decision to position UOG as a main player in restoration ecology research in the humid tropics. The human capacity for research in this programmatic field is expected to grow because of positive outcomes generated from obtaining large grants, hiring more personnel, and expanding the use of UOG labs, research stations, field equipment, and other facilities. It will also allow the inclusion of students in research that has direct impact on the island’s ecosystems.

  • Conduct research according with principles of integrity in research, excellence, collegiality, respect, and diversity;
  • Implement safe practices and procedures in all projects;
  • Investigate relevant processes, feedback, and tradeoffs involved in ecological degradation with emphasis on terrestrial ecosystems;
  • Design, conduct, and report research on topics such as biodiversity loss, ecological system interactions, freshwater ecology, invasive species, land degradation, and others;
  • Publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present research findings in local, regional, national, and international for a;
  • Teach courses in restoration ecology and related topics;
  • Procure extramural grants and additional funding by developing comprehensive, interdisciplinary proposals;
  • Interact actively with organizations such as the Guam Invasive Species Council, Guam Plant Extinction Prevention Program, UOG Center for Island Sustainability, Guam Department of Agriculture, USDA Forest Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, U. S. Military, Guam Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Micronesia Challenge, USDA-APHIS and others;
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students as a committee member or main advisor;
  • Train and supervise research associates, research assistants and other personnel;
  • Collaborate with other UOG academic units.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum: Ph.D. in a relevant field from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent. Must be willing to teach online.

Preferred: Publication track record; teaching experience; grant writing skills.

Police and Court Clearance: Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment. Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence. Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.

WORK ELIGIBILITY:

Section 25103, Chapter 25, Title 10 of the Guam Code Annotated requires college or university employees to undergo a physical examination, to include a test for tuberculosis (skin or x-ray), prior to employment and at least annually thereafter. A report of such examination must be conducted by a licensed physician within a state or territory of the United States and must be submitted upon request.

Federal law requires presentation of eligibility to work in the United States within seventy-two (72) hours of reporting for employment. Specifically, 8 USC 1324A requires the employer to verify the identity and eligibility to work in the United States of all newly hired employees.
