The Department of Performing Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time term faculty appointment for Academic Year 2022-2023. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. The appointment is a 9-month term position and will commence on August 29, 2022.

Applicants should hold a minimum of an MFA or other terminal degree in dance and demonstrate a minimum of two years of experience teaching in a college setting. The position will require teaching three undergraduate courses per semester (fall and spring).

The successful candidate will be an active dance practitioner with production experience, and who will be committed to the dance program’s pedagogical value system, which is grounded in inclusivity, hosted within the dancing body, guided by creative practice as research methodology, and committed to the multi-faceted learner within a transdisciplinary setting. The faculty member will be expected to teach six courses across the academic year: Dance Composition and American University Dance Company (as preferred assigned classes), with the remaining courses from among the following: an additional production course, upper-level dance writing and research courses, Embodied Knowledge courses at all levels in one or more forms from amongst current offerings (West African, African Diasporic, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Improvisation, Urban Dance Styles, Somatics), Dance Pedagogy, and/or courses in the AU Core. Additional duties include programmatic service such as level placement, auditions, recruitment, and participation in Department and University activities and/or service.
