Senior Instructional Technologist

The Office of Innovative Learning, Design, and Assessment (OILDA) at School of Education (SOE) is seeking a Senior Instructional Technologist (Sr. IT) to join its Multimedia Technology & Training Team (MTT). This position will support, collaborate, consult, develop, and implement innovative technology strategies and solutions to meet SOE’s growing instructional technology needs.

The Sr. IT will be an integral part of the MTT team, and recommend, implement, and assess new technologies for online, onsite, and hybrid courses. This position reports directly to the Director of OILDA.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Instructional Technology Support (45%)

  • Research, evaluate, and lead implementation of new technology solutions that are crucial to teaching and learning.
  • Consult with faculty and staff, both internal and external, to research, investigate, develop, and recommend technology solutions.
  • Provide expert support to OILDA team members and faculty/staff on Learning Management System (Canvas) related inquiries and recommend solutions.
  • Monitor closely LMS and engage in in-depth quality assurance testing to ensure all technologies functioning properly.
  • Design and develop technology tutorials and training materials.
  • Collaborate with internal team members and vendors’ tech support to Investigate, trouble-shoot, and resolve technical issues.
  • Manage and/or assist with course copying and maintenance in Canvas.
  • Create reports on technology usage to support strategic decision making.
  • Assumes an admin/leadership role on eLearning tools as assigned.
  • Keeps abreast of developments of related instructional technologies.
  • Researches and disseminate educational technology resources and best practices in technology enhanced teaching and learning.

Course Design, Development, Delivery & Innovations (35%)

  • Collaborates with instructional design team and faculty to develop technology-enriched course materials using new and emerging instructional technologies, digital media, web-based technologies, etc.
  • Collaborate with instructional design team to design and develop multimedia course content, such as audio/video lectures and interactives.
  • Assists instructional designers and faculty in developing reusable learning objects (Videos, lecture capture etc.) and integrating them into their courses.
  • Assists Instructional designers and faculty in effectively integrating instructional technologies in face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.
  • Collaborates with team members to test new technologies and explore innovative technologies. For example, assists in evaluation and pilots of new and emerging instructional technologies based on sound pedagogy and specific instructional needs.
  • Consults with faculty, staff, and teaching assistants on a variety of instructional technologies such as, Canvas, TurnItIn, Microsoft Teams, VoiceThread, Zoom, Poll Everywhere, etc.
  • Lead and support Section 508, UDL and accessibility standards for online learning environment and course development.
  • Works collaboratively with other Hopkins schools and Central IT in solving technological issues as related to Canvas and other shared learning resources.

Training & Workshops (15%)

  • Collaborates with other OILDA team members, including instructional technologists, instructional designers, and assessment specialists in designing and delivering faculty, staff, and students training workshops on emerging instructional technologies.
  • Create, develop, and maintain online tech resources for faculty and students to support best practices in teaching and learning with technologies.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • Manage software license renewals and pricing negotiations with vendors.
  • Serve as OILDA point of contact for some software procurement, negotiation and renewal.
  • Occasionally support school-wide events, such as webinars, academic program student orientations, conferences.

Note: This position requires occasional evenings and weekends in Baltimore campus to accommodate program needs.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
  • Five years related experience, such as, progressively responsible experience in instructional technology integration, tech support, course design and development, multimedia design and development.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience, and additional experience may substitute required education to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Graduate Degree (MA or MS) from a regionally accredited college or university in instructional technology, instructional design, education, computer science, graphic design, multimedia studies or a related field.
  • Experience administering/managing a Learning Management system or systems.
  • Experience with course development process in LMS.
  • Experience writing and editing using HTML.
  • Experience with multimedia and video editing tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Camtasia, Premiere, Panopto, etc.
  • Experience with developing and delivering training in instructional technologies.
  • Extensive experience with Learning Management Systems (Canvas highly preferred), web design & development (e.g., HTML/CSS, JavaScript).
  • Advanced knowledge or experience in image creation & manipulation (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator), and multimedia authoring (e.g. Articulate Storyline & Rise, Camtasia, Captivate).
  • Advanced knowledge with SCORM and create SCORM compliant instructional content.
  • Advanced knowledge of streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types, and formats.
  • Extensive experience in graphic/media design elements, color theories, user graphical interface design, and dashboard design.
  • Advanced knowledge with LTI and RESTful APIs.
  • Experience in development and delivering training with instructional technologies.
  • Experience and interest in exploring the integration of VR/AR/MR/XR technology into classrooms.

Special Knowledge, Skill & Abilities:

Technical Skills:

  • Extensive experience in online conferencing software (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office 360.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Use quality assurance and accessibility tools.

Soft Skills:

  • Being collaborative and a team-player is highly valued.
  • Communicate with clarity and respect; listen actively.
  • Prepare written communication with an attention to detail, accuracy, and a collegial tone.
