The Front End Web Developer is a member of the UW Bothell Information Technologies Enterprise Services team and has the primary responsibility for the web platform and associated technologies that host the UW Bothell campus website (uwb.edu). This position is responsible for technical aspects of developing, supporting, and maintaining our existing web platform, as well as planning and executing our web roadmap. This position will advance our campus digital accessibility efforts (see UW Bothell Campus Digital Accessibility Plan on our website) and participate on UW and UW Bothell committees and Communities of Practice. This position requires strong technical, communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills. As a member of a cross-functional team, this individual must demonstrate superior collaboration and teaming skills with both technical and non-technical members. Technical skills include experience with web (UI/UX) development, maintenance, and support; specialized web technologies; knowledge/practice of Information Architecture; strong analytical, organization, project management, and problem-solving skills; guide business and technical specifications; be a detail-oriented, self-starter who can work independently to meet deadlines; possess technical aptitude and the desire to continuously learn new technologies, skills, methods, and best practices; and provide oversight and guidance on best practices related to security, privacy, and accessibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Web Development

• Experience with web development, maintenance, and support including experience developing websites, development of wireframes and templates, customizing design, and enabling sites to be responsive in content management platforms.
• Demonstrates advanced skill in web technologies including HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and scripting (e.g., jQuery, JSON, JavaScript, Bootstrap).
• Utilizes knowledge of web browser functionalities, variances and limitations, mobile optimization, and web server protocols.
• Demonstrates intermediate knowledge and practice of Information Architecture; advises team on categorization of content, taxonomy, semantics, design, and security.
• Works collaboratively with members of the Enterprise Services team on platform upgrades, integrations, API’s, troubleshooting, and support requests; performs business continuity functions related to job responsibilities.
• Guides technical and non-technical stakeholders through the development of technical specifications; utilizes communication, analytical, and technical skills to transform requirements to intuitive designs; develops/follows/reports out on project plans and/or work breakdown structures; high attention to detail, completing tasks with few or no errors; meets deadlines.
• Effectively participates as a member of a cross-functional team; demonstrates strong communication, interpersonal, collaboration, relationship-building, and teaming skills.
• Continually learns and improves existing skillset, including but not limited to: new technologies, skills, methods, and best practices.
• Keeps management apprised of project / task status, and any issues that arise.

Accessibility/Security/Privacy

• Implement best practices for security, privacy (FERPA, GDPR), and accessibility (ADA Section 508, W3C standards).
• Demonstrate knowledge of accessibility issues; familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to design content/applications with accessibility considerations.
• Advise, advocate, and promote digital accessibility standards and practices.
• Collaborate with campus partners to further our UW Bothell Campus Digital Accessibility Plan.
• Keep up with privacy laws (and pending legislation) to understand potential implications for web features including, but not limited to: analytics / tracking, data management / deletion, etc.
• Understanding of OWASP vulnerabilities; participate in technical communities related to (web) security to understand risks, threat vectors, and how to implement best practices.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, liberal arts, related discipline area or an equivalent combination of experience or training..
• At least four years of experience with web development, maintenance, and support including experience developing sites, updating and creating modules, development of wireframes and templates, customizing design, and enabling sites to be responsive in content management platforms

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Advanced experience developing web page templates from wireframe designs using standard web technologies like HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and javascript.
• Understanding of information architecture including: categorization of content, taxonomy, semantics, design, and security
• Knowledge and experience implementing best practices for security, privacy (FERPA, GDPR), and accessibility (ADA Section 508, W3C standards)
• Ability to work with a diverse constituency
• Experience with at least one frontend framework such as Angular, React, or Vue.
• Experience with at least one CSS framework.
• Experience with WordPress template development, plugins, data storage, hooks, functions, taxonomy and debugging.
• Experience with web browser functionalities, variances and limitations, mobile optimization, and web server protocols.

DESIRED:

• Experience with GIT as a version control system.
• Experience working within and managing all stages of a typical Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
• Familiar working in a large-scale, enterprise Web development environment.
• Familiar working in a higher education environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• This position requires a flexible work schedule and the ability to work some evenings or weekends. Must be able to respond to application related outage and security incidents off hours.
