George Washington University

Vice Provost of Budget and Finance

Located blocks from the most influential organizations and government institutions in the world, The George Washington University (GW) is the largest institution of higher education in the nation’s capital. With two of its three campuses located in Washington, D.C. at Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon, and the third located in Loudoun County, Virginia, GW has a well-established presence in the region as a leader in academics and medicine.

The University is a private institution consisting of approximately 2,600 full-time faculty members. Its approximately 11,600 undergraduate students and 15,000 graduate and professional students presently come from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and 130 countries. Among the finest public and private research universities, GW is a comprehensive university with broad responsibility for education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. As a preeminent urban research university in the nation and the world, the University is recognized for its excellence in teaching and scholarship, including more than $200 million (FY 2021) in externally funded research across the disciplines.

GW has a proud and long tradition. The concept of a large, urban institution began to evolve early in the University’s history with the addition of schools of medicine, law, and business. Today, GW maintains a $2.4 billion endowment (FY 2021) and consists of the following schools and colleges: the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (which includes the School of Media and Public Affairs, the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, and the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration); the Elliott School of International Affairs; the Milken Institute School of Public Health; the School of Nursing; the School of Engineering and Applied Science; the School of Business; the Law School; the Graduate School of Education and Human Development; the School of Medicine and Health Sciences; and the College of Professional Studies (which includes the Graduate School of Political Management). Few universities of this size have the diversity and breadth of educational opportunities, including internships with local and international organizations, and the well-connected faculty that GW offers.

The George Washington University seeks a strategic, experienced leader who has the academic vision, financial acumen, and ability to collaborate with administrators, staff, and faculty throughout the university to advance the academic mission. The Vice Provost for Budget and Finance reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Provost’s leadership team. The Vice Provost will work closely with the Provost, Vice Provosts, and Deans to construct academic budgets that promote and sustain academic and research excellence at GW. In addition, the Vice Provost for Budget and Finance will work with the President’s Office and other university units to establish budget priorities that support the academic mission. The Vice Provost for Budget and Finance will also work with the Office of the CFO to promote financial transparency throughout the university.

The Vice Provost for Budget and Finance will be an accomplished leader with notable experience leading strategic operations at complex academic institutions. The successful candidate will be a highly collaborative and solutions-oriented leader who can partner effectively with the Provost and senior leaders on campus. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader and strong communicator who has a proven track record of setting strategy and driving results. The successful candidate will be able to translate the bilateral needs of the academic and finance units to further academic, research, and operational goals. Qualified candidates will possess experience in, and appreciation for, a university’s academic environment; the governance structure, roles, and relationships of faculty, staff, and students; and the diverse needs for financial and operational support.

The review of nominations and applications for the position will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled. All candidate information will be held in strict confidence. Qualified applicants should forward an electronic version of their curriculum vitae (CV) and a letter of interest to:
