Tenured or Tenure-Track Professor, Director of the Sparkman Center for Global Health

The School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for a 12-month, tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Professor. A key role within this position is serving as the Director for the Sparkman Center for Global Health. Applicants with exceptional qualifications at the rank of Associate Professor will also be considered.

We seek an outstanding scholar who demonstrates experience in interdisciplinary public health research, practice, and teaching in global health, who can lead the Sparkman Center for Global Health in fulfilling its mission to develop sustainable approaches to advance global health equity and social justice through support for cutting-edge interdisciplinary education, research, global health practice, and community engagement in collaboration with international and domestic partners. Scholars with research and practice focus areas in any of a wide spectrum of global health topics should apply, including sexual and reproductive health, mental health, non-communicable diseases, and infectious diseases. Candidates whose work includes translational and implementation science are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will qualify for a primary appointment in one of the five departments of the School – Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Behavior, and Health Policy and Organization.

Founded in 1978, the UAB School of Public Health has grown to 75 full-time faculty and 1100 students. In 2019, the school had more than $37 million in research funding and has been ranked in the top 20 NIH-funded Schools of Public Health for the last 10 years. Diversity is one of the school’s values and strengths, with 45% of students identifying as a member of an underrepresented racial/ethnic group and 16% identifying as a first-generation college student. In 2020, the School of Public Health received the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

The Sparkman Center for Global Health https://www.uab.edu/sparkmancenter/ was established in 1979, recognizing the late Senator John J. Sparkman's global understanding about the linkage between health and human development, and the important role that the United States could play in collaborating with low and middle-income countries (LMICs). It is one of two endowed centers in the School of Public Health. The SCGH is engaged with international partners in South Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Region of the Americas. The 2020 Annual Report of the SCGH provides a full overview of its activities globally and across the UAB campus.   The Sparkman Center is part of the INSIGHT consortium of universities providing global health research training to US and LMIC scholars with D43 funding from the NIH Fogarty International Center and other NIH institutes http://ciheb.org/INSIGHT-Fogarty-Scholars/ .

Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in a public health discipline or a related field and demonstrate excellence in global health research, practice, and teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. High ranking candidates will have an exemplary record of research and teaching excellence, leadership experience, and expertise in developing a nationally and/or internationally recognized, externally funded research program.
