The Director of Infrastructure and Operations serves as Buena Vista University’s top-level expert technical expert, provides leadership for a team supporting a complex infrastructure, and provides guidance and advice to technical and non-technical staff in support of a secure, reliable, and highly available technology environment. This includes working with University staff and third parties to develop a vision for the future of higher education technology, definition of requirements, and collaboration with others to ensure successful implementation and use of innovative technological experiences.

Primary responsibilities:

The Director of Infrastructure and Operations is responsible for the University’s technology infrastructure whether directly managed, third-party hosted / managed, or *aaS systems. In addition to leadership of the Infrastructure and Operations team, direct responsibilities include design of authentication systems; business continuity, disaster recovery, and e-Discovery solutions; and storage and computing systems.

Additional responsibilities include issues related to development of vision for higher education technology and its implementation and use at BVU, security and compliance, and the drafting and implementation of relevant University policies and procedures. Overall responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provides high-value leadership to members of the Infrastructure and Operations team. Guides the team through projects and ensures the greatest level of success of their efforts. Mentors members of the team in areas of personal and professional development to ensure their continued growth.
  • Develops and maintains technology lifecycles to ensure continued visionary development and secure, reliable, available infrastructure and supporting tools. Included are on-premise and cloud-based storage and computing infrastructure, hypervisors, physical and virtual computing, and *aaS services.
  • Responsible for development and use of e-Discovery technology and ITSS responses to legal and regulatory inquiry.
  • Architects, integrates, and maintains Azure Active Directory, Identity & Access Management, and related systems and services. Incorporates the principles of privacy-by-design in all aspects of information security.
  • Leads and assists with development of automated solutions streamlining and complementing administration and support of infrastructure systems.
  • Responsible for audit response and development of remediation plans for audit findings affecting areas of responsibility of the Infrastructure and Operations team.
  • Coordinates, advises, and assists in cyber investigations, incident response, forensics, and documentation.
  • Responsible for overall technology security risk management, security planning, and compliance reporting. Evaluates internal, third-party, and cloud architecture for security compliance and advises the Chief Information Officer in matters of associated risk.
  • Develops, maintains, and tests business continuity and disaster recovery operations plans. Partners with line of business departments to ensure thoughtful development of cooperative BC / DR plans.
  • Coordinates and / or conducts security analyses on systems and services. Coordinates and oversees Microsoft 365 and other Cloud services security settings and standards.
  • Responsible for automated event monitoring and alert tracking, change management, and timely completion of work within the Infrastructure and Operations team.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with other technical and non-technical leaders and advises the Chief Information Officer on issues related to areas of responsibility.
  • Thoroughly documents architecture, designs, plans, and changes relating to areas of responsibility and works with others to ensure complete documentation as needed.
  • Works with technical and non-technical users to collect and understand requirements for services and applications, and to define system maturation.
  • Collects and/or co-defines business and technical requirements that will have an impact on the technical infrastructure and incorporates those requirements into technical selections and architecture.
  • Leads the discovery, feasibility analysis, and prototyping of future-state technical tools, systems, software, architecture, and protocols for incorporation into the University’s technical architecture.
  • Ensures that the technical architecture is forward-looking, cost effective, secure, meets business and technical requirements, and is technically correct.
  • Conveys system designs and assists other team members in developing secure solutions.
  • Leads and participates in project planning and execution as required.
  • Develops policies and procedures in accordance with defined frameworks and best practices.
  • Ensures compliance with institutional standards, policies, and procedures and provides justification for deviations.
  • Proactively researches, develops, and maintains hardware and software standards.
  • Actively participates in national groups involved in areas of expertise and involvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • Four-year degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience including a minimum of six years of experience in networking and security, preferably in a university setting.
  • High degree of understanding and demonstrated experience with NIST, CIS, and other recognized information / cyber security standards.
  • Experience designing and supporting systems protecting PII, FERPA, and HIPAA information in a distributed environment.
  • Extensive experience with PowerShell.
  • Networking and / or cyber security certifications preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with ITSM, ITIL, and / or COBIT preferred.
