The Gupta-Klinsky India Institute (GKII) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is seeking an Executive Director. GKII was established in 2020 as a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to partnering with India to deepen the understanding of critical issues and challenges facing India and their larger global implications. Its mission: mobilizing Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, students, and alumni to work with partners in India to improve society through research, education, policy, and practice. GKII draws on JHU’s global reputation as a leading research university and represents all parts of the University, including all its academic divisions, professional schools, and affiliated laboratories.

The Gupta-Klinsky India Institute at The Johns Hopkins University pursues its mission through three strategic directions:

    Creating opportunities and lowering barriers for collaborative research, practice, education and training for social good Amplifying current strengths of JHU work in India through targeted research hubs that convene and stimulate innovation, partnerships, and knowledge sharing Shaping the future through interdisciplinary scholarship and investment in new areas of knowledge and application to practice in emerging or neglected fields of potential impact

These strategic directions are intended to catalyze new ideas, partnerships, and leverage local, international and instructional resources. They are implemented through a set of operational principles organized to provide responsive services, foster collaboration, and provide efficiencies of scale and scope. The Executive Director, by applying leadership and best practice managerial approaches, creates a supportive, open, participatory, and results-oriented working environment for the GKII, and that in turn supports its network of faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as collaborating partners and supporters, to ultimately deliver on the mission and strategic goals of GKII.

The Executive Director will be responsible for support and delivery of all GKII activities, including stakeholder engagement, strategic development and implementation, and financial performance and sustainability. These responsibilities include but are not limited to facilitating the development of research and teaching missions; creating programming, content, collateral and plans to market (and support others’ efforts to market) the work of GKII; developing relevant relationships across local, state, federal, and other government entities; supporting the development and alumni relations office in external affairs efforts; collaborating with the Johns Hopkins India Foundation to fundraise from local Indian constituents; coordinating and liaising with the Johns Hopkins India Private Limited; overseeing other operational and budgetary aspects of the overall program; and expanding relationships with external organizations and individuals engaged in complementary work.

Reporting Structure:

The Executive Director for GKII will report to the Co-Chairs of the Faculty Steering Committee and the Provost of Johns Hopkins. This position will report to Dr. Amita Gupta, Director of Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine, and co-report to David Peters, Edgar Berman Professor and Chair of the Department of International Health in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. The incumbent also will be responsible indirectly to the JHII Faculty Steering Committee and the Provost of Johns Hopkins University.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Designs and executes strategy
  • Coordinates activities with India-based GKII program staff
  • Collaborates with the Faculty Steering Committee
  • Works with Faculty Steering Committee on goals for strategies, products, events and convening of relevant parties
  • Prepares the Faculty Steering Committee to undertake a wide range of internal and external interactions with faculty, students, University Administration, Trustees, donors and external stakeholders as needed
  • Helps develop new ideas, programs, and other activities to support and expand the mission of GKII
  • Serves as a connector across divisions and offices within Johns Hopkins
  • Acts as Institute liaison to internal groups across Johns Hopkins such as Divisional/School Leadership, Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), Government and Community Affairs, Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate, Office of the General Counsel, Budget and Finance teams, Johns Hopkins India Private Limited (JHIPL), and others
  • Collaborates with DAR and, through that office, GKII’s Board of Advisors, to identify and cultivate new donor prospects
  • Helps to identify and prioritize a range of funding opportunities to support Institute’s goals and coordinate across DAR groups to ensure work considers broader Hopkins needs
  • Acts as representative of Institute as needed with various constituencies and, in concert with DAR, supports preparation of proposals and materials
  • Works closely with Office of the Provost on strategic budgeting decisions, design, and reporting on all activities and financial issues from year to year.
  • Supports external engagement
  • In cooperation with DAR, maintains relationship with GKII Advisory Board
  • Liaises with and advises the Johns Hopkins India Foundation
  • Develops relationships with outside groups including other university institutes, non-profits, think tanks, and policymakers
  • Identifies ways for groups to interact and access resources
  • Leads communication to Indian, US, and global audiences
  • Liaises on marketing, branding, and outreach across whole university
  • Oversees plans and programs for GKII including events, conferences, webcasts, etc.
  • Manages a growing team of GKII staff, including two communications personnel, a program manager, and a consultant

    Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

      Bachelor’s Degree in related field 7 years work experience in leadership and management role, preferably in related fields such as healthcare or public health, politics, NGO, fundraising, or academics Demonstrated India-related work experience in senior positions of influence (five years minimum) Experience in communications and program development Recognized effective and strong leadership and management skills and experience, managing a team of staff and budgets to deliver against workplans (five years minimum)
