The Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL) in the College Of Education has a part to full-time opening for a Social Studies Professional Development School (PDS) Coordinator with an August 2022 start date.

The Secondary Education-Social Studies Area of Concentration offers three teacher preparation pathways: undergraduate, five-year integrated undergraduate and masters, and one-year masters. Over the course of our programs, students develop critical knowledge, skills, and teaching practices to become effective teachers in our diverse and multicultural society. The program has a social justice-oriented approach to teaching social studies and supporting all students to succeed. Under the guidance of highly experienced mentor teachers and field supervisors, who collaborate with the PDS coordinator, our students partake in an immersive yearlong field experience (internship) in a local public school.

Job Description:

The Social Studies PDS Coordinator will collaborate with faculty and staff within the TLPL Department and the Secondary Social Studies certification pathway. The successful candidate’s main responsibilities will be to support undergraduate and graduate students during their intern teaching experiences. This includes coordinating field placements, working with mentors and supervisors to monitor students’ growth, and facilitating weekly seminars to support the students and visiting school sites. These duties allow for a flexible work schedule, including opportunities for some remote work.

This is a one-year, renewable, part to full-time (ranging from 55-100% to be negotiated depending on program need and candidate preference), nine-month PDS Coordinator/Faculty Specialist position in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL).

Primary Responsibilities:

• Coordinate placements and field experiences for middle and high school Social Studies interns in collaboration with program instructors
• Recruit and train school-based mentors
• Hire, train, and oversee internship supervisors
• Work with mentors and supervisors to monitor, assist, and evaluate interns and initiate and coordinate action plans, if necessary
• Lead undergraduate and graduate internship seminars which include edTPA support for interns
• Support program admissions
• Participate in COE, TLPL and Secondary Education meetings

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree by August 2022 from an accredited university. Graduate or undergraduate degree must be in Social Studies Secondary Education or related field
• Experience teaching in diverse 7-12 Secondary Social Studies classroom settings
• Experience in leadership, coaching and/or mentoring of in-service or pre-service teachers
• Evidence of commitment to inclusive pedagogies, anti-racist pedagogies, and social justice
• Experience working with students and teachers from culturally diverse populations and individuals with marginalized and minoritized identities, English Language Learners, and/or students receiving special education services.

Salary Range/Benefits: $50,000-$64,000 (full-time rate to be adjusted by education, experience and workload percentage taken on in this part to full-time position).
