Marshall University is entering a new era with exciting new leadership, and the institution seeks a resourceful, innovative, and collaborative executive to serve as Marshall's Chief Information Officer and play an integral role in helping to transform how higher education is delivered, with the goal of improving student experience, enabling access to education, and supporting research and innovation portfolios. Marshall seeks someone to be a transformational partner to the university's recently appointed 38th President, Brad D. Smith.

Marshall University is a public comprehensive research university with a rich history as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in West Virginia. Marshall advances the public good through innovative, accredited educational programs. The university is located in Huntington, West Virginia, with additional campuses in South Charleston, Point Pleasant, Teays Valley, and Beckley. Marshall is classified as a Carnegie Doctoral University: High Research Activity - R2 institution. The university enrolls 11,962 students: 8,776 undergraduate, 2,515 graduate, and 671 first professional. The university offers more than 150 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs organized into seven academic colleges and two schools. As the Thundering Herd, the university participates in the NCAA Division I, Sun Belt Conference. Marshall University is situated in a region of great natural beauty; Huntington is nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountain region, with the Ohio River creating the perimeter of the city.

The Chief Information Officer is in the senior information technology role for Marshall and will provide the vision and leadership for developing and implementing IT strategies and initiatives university-wide. Candidates must possess a degree from an accredited higher education institution in a related field, plus a substantive record of successful, progressive leadership experience at a level commensurate with the position. This person must be able to work with a sense of urgency and towards action in a fast-paced environment, and possess an understanding of the developing strategic information requirements of a research institution. As a member of the university's senior leadership, the CIO will report directly to the President and will serve on his Cabinet. This person will lead and manage the Information Technology division, including: Business Operations and Central Support; Campus ID Office; Infrastructure Communications; Infrastructure Data Center; Enterprise Applications Business and Process Analysis; Enterprise Applications Technical Integration; Digital Media Services; Information Security; and IT Services and Support.

The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics and attributes:

• The demonstrated experience and skills to provide leadership in the development of a strategic direction for IT services; gauge and anticipate the diverse needs of university constituents, monitoring trends and innovations in the industry to meet those needs; develop and implement strategic long- and short-term technology plans; and make actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
• Ability to integrate and coordinate the development and implementation of IT programs across the university to achieve maximum institution-wide efficiencies and synergies, and to coordinate the identification and prioritization of required IT initiatives among the university's various operating components.
• A commitment to ensuring IT data security, risk management, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning processes are in place. Develop, successfully implement, and oversee strategic technology policies.
• A readiness to lead budgetary planning for institutional technology needs and to develop annual IT operational and capital budgets.
• A commitment to working with the student body and Student Affairs professionals to advance the student experience with creative technology integration in areas where students live, work, and play.
• A readiness to ensure the integrity and strategic development of the university's information and communications infrastructure, and the systems infrastructure for mission critical functions.
• A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• A readiness to create trusted relationships with team members and support them in achieving their goals.
